I have a 6 1/2 inch deep 14" birch snare (Gretsch Catalina Birch set) and was wanting to know what head combo works best to get that papery snappy sound that responds well to rolls like soft to medium double's, 5's 7's etc. without being too prone to getting snare buzz. Right now I have an Evans HD Dry with an Aquarian Classic Clear snare side and 20 strand wires. It sounds a little boxy with what's on it now.

Any suggestions on what will get me the type of sound I'm looking for on this snare will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Evans makes a Dry batter head that is not as focussed as the HD Dry. You might want to try that first for your batter side. I have had excellent luck with Ludwig snare side heads and Evans Hazy 300 snare side heads
