I loved my clear 4.5 X 14 Fibes snare. I put a 2 ply head on it and that snare sounded the way I wanted it to. My favorite snare at the moment is a 4 1/2 X 14 Slingerland aluminum 8 lug that just sounds wonderful to me.

I don't like all the fancy throw off's. Heck I never use it to throw off the snares anyway!

Well I've only tried one, and it was REALLY good sounding snare.  But like most modern single ply snares, it reveals it's true power on rimshot or very sensitive playing. They are not magical drums, but just very powerful snares with big headroom and sensitivity.
Some even find them loud and bit obnoxious since they don't choke at higher volumes. Wood drums on steroids, I would call them.

I wouldn't call them overvalued vintage drums, since they don't actually hold their value that well. You can get a used one quite affordably compared to a new one. And when new, they are priced the same or even bit lower as most similar single ply drums like Craviotto for example.

Jazz Fests in general.

I agree. I still somewhat like them, but at times overrated. The Downbeat is a cool snare though.
