I have a 12 year old student who loves Benny Goodman, Krupa, and all the old swing era stuff. He has no interest in rock music, hip hop, or anything current. His mother says he's an "old soul" or possibly a reincarnated swing drummer from the 1930's.

He loves to play "Sing, Sing, Sing," but that's just beating on a floor tom.

He has a lot to learn. I'll show him some brushes and four on the floor swing beats.

I'm just thinking, this kid will never get a gig!

Crazy.   :occasion5:

That is crazy!  Maybe he’ll change his tastes in music when he starts to meet girls..

I would imagine that the chicks definitely consider him a nerd.

I found my old Krupa / Rich LP called Burnin' Beat, with a lot of 4 on the floor swing tunes on it. I'll get him playing along with it.

But I'm going to expose him to Elvin, Tony, and Roy just to open his ears,

If he likes Krupa, he'd probably also like Chick Webb.  There are some amazing 1939 airchecks of Chick's band including some terrific drum solos.

They were remastered by the legendary Jack Towers - his remasters are apparently back in print:

Very cool. I'll turn him on to that. Thanks.
