I've been tracking my Ludwig Element SE drums and it says "Exception"
and the progress is shown below:

SEATTLE, WA, US 02/07/2010 3:00 A.M. HELD BY ORIGIN LOCATION
GREENSBORO, NC, US 02/04/2010 1:23 A.M. DEPARTURE SCAN
GREENSBORO, NC, US 02/02/2010 10:16 P.M. ARRIVAL SCAN
MONROE, NC, US 02/02/2010 8:02 P.M. DEPARTURE SCAN
02/02/2010 6:35 P.M. ORIGIN SCAN

Does anyone know a customer service phone number that actually puts me in touch with a HUMAN BEING and not all that automated BS that leads nowhere so I can get more info?

you can get a person with their main number. try saying representative while you hear the recording. or press 0, or wait until the recording offers that option.

Chances are the rep will only repeat what you already know from the exception notice. Likely the delivery date is being postponed. 8-10 days' delivery time from NC to WA is not unusual. Check the tracking number again tomorrow.

It may certainly be worth calling them, main number, and asking for an operator.

wouldnt the original location be monroe though? the drums are already to seattle. its like monroe called and had the shipment held if that makes any sense?

Whatever the case they arrived today. Hard to believe that it took two days to get to my house which is 20 minutes away from where they were held up!
I looked up the UPS Seattle Customer Center and spoke to someone yesterday who couldn't tell me why they were held up but told me they were scheduled to be delivered today. I was skeptical but they were correct. Whew!
I set 'em up and tuned 'em. Now I just have to get some playing time.

I have had numerous things held by UPS - stuff had been "held by origin location", "exception", etc. Exception normally applies to situations like weather, a street was closed off due to an auto accident at the time UPS tried to deliver, a UPS truck breaking down, rottweilier sitting on the front porch, etc. Held by origin location can mean a couple of things. I had a kit once that shipped in 3 boxes. Two pieces were tagged w/a barcode and entered into the UPS system by the shipper. The 3rd one wasn't. When UPS came to pick the boxes up, the shipper realized the mistake. There wasn't time to slap a label/barcode on the last box, so the UPS guy just came back the next day to pick up all 3 boxes. Also, origin location can refer to the UPS depot or UPS store that the box is initially dropped off at. Again, they can hold it because of weather, transportation problems, etc. It's up to the UPS drivers to enter some sort of detailed explanation for the exception or hold. The driver who delivers my boxes is usually very good about doing that, but my guess is that many drivers don't bother.
