I have been playing drums since the age of 13, with guitar as a second instrument. Jazz was always my first love, but I played pop and commercial stuff for years early in my career, to make a living. I spent many years on the road. I studied at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, NY with great drummers like Jack DeJohnette, Bob Moses, and Stu Martin.
It was inevitable that I would go full time into jazz, but once I did so, I decided to stop traveling and settle down on the southwest Florida coast, so I copped a day gig as an English professor at a state university. I teach American Lit and creative writing, and I can pick and choose my jazz gigs. You wouldn't believe the great players down here--world class guys. I'm blessed to work with these great musicians, and I'm still learning about this music every day.
I got started as a 20 year-old kid in Columbus, Ohio, playing with great jazz organists including Don Patterson and Hank Marr, and over the years, I've performed with Howard Roberts, David "Fathead" Newman, Freddie Cole, Ben Wolfe and Dan Miller from Harry Connick, Jr.'s band, Ira Sullivan, Kenny Drew, Jr., Lew Del Gatto from NBC's Saturday Night Live band, Wycliffe Gordon, and many more great artists. Plus, I paid my dues at Disney World in Orlando, FL, my adopted hometown.
