I got a Yamaha Tour custom kit, which is a maple shell and natural satin finish.
They don't make an 8" tom in this series, but there is a Yamaha stage custom in 8" with a natural gloss finish.
It is birch, but it has the same hardware as the Tour custom.

If I get the gloss birch shell, is there a way to dull the lacquer finish to more closely match the maple satin shell?

I know with guitar finishes you can lightly buff a satin finish to get some gloss, but I want to go the other way.
    From gloss to satin.

    So, bottom line.
Starting with birch gloss natural shell.
Want to make it look like a maple satin natural shell.
I realize it's never going to be 100%, but with a small tom, it shouldn't be too obvious.

Probably just wet sand with around a 2000 grit and then scuff with 000 steel wool. As long as you always go in the same direction it should come out pretty good.

    Thanks.
    What exactly is "wet sanding"?
Are you just making the sand paper damp with water?

Ahhh - the beauty of YouTube. Lots of videos there, though I cannot say which work better than others.
