I got a Yamaha Tour custom kit, which is a maple shell and natural satin finish. They don't make an 8" tom in this series, but there is a Yamaha stage custom in 8" with a natural gloss finish. It is birch, but it has the same hardware as the Tour custom. If I get the gloss birch shell, is there a way to dull the lacquer finish to more closely match the maple satin shell? I know with guitar finishes you can lightly buff a satin finish to get some gloss, but I want to go the other way. From gloss to satin. So, bottom line. Starting with birch gloss natural shell. Want to make it look like a maple satin natural shell. I realize it's never going to be 100%, but with a small tom, it shouldn't be too obvious.
