OT: I sneezed and now I can barely walk

    Yeah... I wish there were more to it than the subject line says like the sneeze caused me to bump into something that, Rube Goldberg-style, set in motion a series of events culminating in a piano falling on my back, or whatever. But... there really isnt. I was making oatmeal, I sneezed, and suddenly my lower back seized up. A pulled muscle, Im assuming. This was almost 12 hours ago. I havent been able to stand up straight or do anything more than hobble slowly (and painfully) since.

    Anyone ever have something like this happen? Or at 31 do I just have the body of a 90-year-old?

    I've done that before - a sneeze which pulls a muscle. I think mine was in my neck or shoulders, but it still hurt. At least mine didn't go for 12 hours. Not sure how to fix it other than maybe light stretching and lots of fluids.

    Similar, and I was even younger when it happened (28 y/o).

    You know, just yer everyday Rock-n-Roll pie fight with band mates. We ran out of pies so I picked up a fellow by the lapels, held him up off his feet against a wall and rubbed my pie-covered head all over his face. Good fun, the reg, y'know... The next morning I was immobilized by back pain - it lasted a week or so, no damage.

    Sudden exertion with no warmup - a sneeze can be similar, particularly if ones neck is turned at the moment of impact. Also dangerous to sneeze and simultaneously cough/fart etc. I tell ya, it's a jungle out there.

    Try both ice and heat to see if you can reduce the spasm. Pain meds can help but if it gets real bad go to the doc for some muscle relaxants. Good luck and get well soon.

    Well, glad to know its a bit more common than I first thought. A herniated disc is looking like a real contender here, though. Ugh.

    When I was a kid and on the back porch ,my dad, who was probably about 45 , killed a wasp, bent down to pick it up and didn't walk for a week. I've been lucky so far. Hope you get straightened up soon.

    This kind of injury is not at all unusual. About a month ago I was pulling wet laundry from a washing machine when it felt like the lower half of my body separated from the top while I was being stabbed in the back with a knife. I thought a I'd slipped a disc but it was "only" a severe lower back sprain.

    In all I missed two weeks of work and a third week on regaining strength. For the first four days it took me 5 minutes each morning finding the least painful way to crawl out of bed. I couldn't extend my legs enough to walk more than a slow hobble for a week. When I was recovering, my left hip compensated for the weakness in my back and felt like it was giving way.

    The best thing for it was a hot bath to loosen up my lower back muscles and those that were gripping and compensating in the vicinity, and plenty of traction-like, immobile rest. When it felt ok enough to move around, I walked around the block once or twice to increase circulation and stretch everything out.

    Go slow in all your movements, don't rush back into work, and give it time. You should be ok in a week or two.

    The number one lesson I learned was to not take my health for granted. I'm ready to work on my core strength and get my gut back down to size with reasonable portions of food and eating several small meals a day to increase my metabolic rate. Sugar? Cut it from the diet except on rare occasions.

    you gotta turn your head and sneeze the other way. i have had a few times over the years where i did something and my lower back hurt and i could barely walk. it lasted about a day.

    I feel for ya...
    I was in a pretty bad car wreck in 2000 where I fractured several bones, including 3 lower vertebrea. A couple years pass and I'm taking a shower in the mornng before work, and felt a slight "twinge" in my back putting the shampoo back.
    I get out of the shower, dry off, go to the bedroom where I sit on the edge of the bed to put on my socks and as I lift my leg / bend over with sock it's like I've been shot in the lower back. I literally could not move. I had to wake now ex-wife and she has to help me up, mind you I am sitting, and help me down stairs.
    I think I've blown a disc in my back, due to being diagnosed with spondilytis after the car wreck. So she helps me to the car and to the ER.
    Sit in the ER for 8 hours and it turns out to be a back spasm. They prescribe some killer muscle relaxers and a day later, it's like nothing happened.
    But..... About once a year since them, I will do the slightest thing and bam! a back spasm.
    I'm sure that's what you have, the sudden shock of that sneeze just at the right time. I suggest going to a "doc in the box" clinic and getting some prescription muscle relaxers. A day or so on them, it will go away.

    Tweaking the back seems to happen out of the blue and for the least little reason. The night before leaving for a winter vacation at a beach resort I hurt my back stepping off the last step of a bleacher seat at a basketball game. I could barely walk all week...not to mention the misery flying on a plane.

    At my age I go to bed fine and wake up injured.

    Please be more careful...sneezing in your oatmeal could kill you!

    It has happened to me. A sneeze can generate a pretty violent rapid body movement, and that can pull or injure something.

    Welcome to the early beginning of middle age - when that body you thought that was invincible starts indicating otherwise. :)

    A few months back, I scuffed my shoe on the carpet and tripped. Hit hard enough to bruise my hip. This was at work. Drove home, Got out of the car and could not take a single step. Lower back had seized. It was the opposite side of the contusion. It was almost a week where I needed a crutch to get around the house. I could not stand up without help. Muscle relaxers/anti inflamatories from the doc finally did the trick, BUT if you are experiencing inflammation (likely?), then avoid hot compresses or heating pads. You will need use cold to reduce swelling. I used a hot pad which made my problem worse, even though it felt good in the moment.

    Go to WebMd and search your symptoms, self diagnose your certainly fatal condition, then see the doctor so he/she can set you straight! It's always a big relief after self diagnosing on-line!!!

    Well, thank you guys for all the stories/advice. Things got pretty ugly last night. After laying down to watch a movie, thinking the rest would do me good, when I got up I could no longer lift my right leg. Like, at all. It was a very strange sensation. It wasn't even that it hurt that much -- although it did hurt a lot. It was like as soon as I even thought about trying to lift my foot to take a step, my body just went, "NOPE! Not doing that!" and froze up. So I couldn't even try to push through the pain or be ultra manly (and in the process, probably do more damage to myself).

    I finally figured out I could sort of get around the house, though, by doing a weird little Footloose shuffle with my right foot, and eventually I made it into a hot shower. Don't know if it was that or the Chinese cure-all ointment my very non-Chinese wife's family swears by that she rubbed all over my back, but I finally regained mobility, and when I woke up this morning, it feels like someone took a crowbar to my lumbar spine, but I can walk relatively uninhibited. So... I think I'm out of the woods. Hopefully. Still get random muscle spasms when I move too fast or bend the wrong way, but compared to yesterday, I feel like Superman lol.

    But yeah, many lessons learned here, for sure. Not least of which being that sneezing is a young man's game. Now that I'm in my 30s, it's just irresponsible to mess around with crap like that!

    When you sneeze, keep your head straight and looking forward.

    It happens......if you have numbness and tingling, or it persists more than a few days, go to your MD......good luck.

    I have had 2 back surgeries. Both for herniated disks. And yeah, if one is about to go, a strong sneeze can send you over the edge. once it goes.. you may as well just get it fixed. People will say not to have back surgery because you will never be the same. BUT, the reality is that if you DO need back surgery, you'll never be the same anyway.. but you will be BETTER than if you did not have it,. This from a guy who has had 2.

    LOL...but too real!

    Throw this out...I had a back issue years ago lifting some boxes. Friend told me about this;
    NUCCA...very different approach and it helped a lot. Hard to find a NUCCA specialist.
    This is WAY beyond a typical chiropractor...some chiropractors are great, but this approach
    is very detailed...the x-rays alone were unlike anything I ever had before. You will think
    the doctor isn't dong anything...it is micro adjustments.

    I've had my back crack from a sneeze. Sneezes are physically violent things. Crazy. Haha
