What finish did Gretsch make more of…Midnite Blue..or..Champagne?

The August 2022 portion of this thread is referring to the NSMD article that I wrote which was inspired by this thread. Additional discussion about that article is on a new thread - https://www.drumforum.org/threads/latest-nsmd-article-finishes-on-round-badge-gretsch-drums.199698/ The article...

Thanks for the information. Interesting that the replacement 9x13 had a round badge. There are only a few other drums with serial numbers higher that had round badges on my list. Something was going on with this drum.

I have learned that people will often read into things I have written what they want to read. I like your wording. I would also point out that I have personally touched only a tiny fraction of the drums in the study. I rely upon pictures (some good, some bad) and information from others...

I did a very rough count of the sources of the info. I did not record the sources per se, so it is not a sortable field. However, I recorded the name of the source (seller ID or owner name or person reporting information) so I can do a quick count using that. Some drums were found both on...

Thanks. I am just trying to document what insights that 16 years of data gathering provides. It does not do much good if I don't share the information.

From the preliminary work I have done on the 1970s and early 1980s Stop Sign badge drums, the finishes are very different. Wraps are way down and wood finishes are way up compared to the 1960s.

What did you think would be most popular? One caution about these numbers is that the source of most of my information is the internet (ebay, Reverb, Craigslist, drum forums, etc...) Most drums seen on these internet sites are for sale. Drums that are being held by their owners and are not...

If it had paint, I used the term lacquer. All DUCO finishes would have been included in the lacquer category. If it was unpainted wood, then I used the term wood. I threw out over 450 drums because they were rewrapped or stripped of their original finishes (usually wraps). Some of the wood...

Latest NSMD Article - Finishes on Round Badge Gretsch Drums

The Gretsch used the term Sparkle for both sparkles and glass glitters. There is a footnote which mentions this. Although Gretsch had some colors which were true sparkles (hexagonal pieces) in the 1950s and then glass glitters in the 1960s. I do not know when they crossed over or if they went...

Thanks for catching that. Red and Green are flipped in the table. The graph shows what the data showed. I kept having to move the colors around so all of the small pie pieces were not together because the titles overlapped. This made me move their spots in the table around, too. Apparently...

Take a look at my latest article on the Not So Modern Drummer site. This one started as an answer to a DFO post asking about the relative popularity of certain finishes. https://www.drumforum.org/threads/what-finish-did-gretsch-make-more-of…midnite-blue-or-champagne.197196/#post-2303215 I...
