Do you use your 8” tom?

All I do is record, so yes I use both an 8 and an 18 pretty regularly.

    Recording to a metronome?

I always use a click but sometimes I play loosely around it. I get all my music by way of midi so its a given.

    Concert Toms, love’em!

They sound great one headed! I still use basically an kit for recording and sometimes add an 18...all double headed. It works well for me. I will say the 8 is quite tight...both heads at G.

Ok so I'm listening to takes of Be My Baby- Ronnettes

There were also castanets that had a handle, so you shook them in time almost like a tamborine. Once you got used to them you could get some decent speed with them.

Recording yourself and making videos: audio interfaces.

Thanks for getting back with me and your support goes a long way in my book. I thought I was on track, plus I have been here a long, long time...98??? in various forms. I appreciate kindly your explanation. Its a're doing this every day and i am not. Go back to the 70's and we would...

How much does a bass drum mount actually change the sound?

Maybe if your bass drum sound is huge and unmuffled, you could hear a little more low end resonance from behind the drum...but I never set my drum up this way. It is always muffled..sometimes to a huge degree, and to the mic and at the board it is unnoticeable, plus a touch of eq can get it...

Wow my butt is in love

I like the Pearl (all metal) seat. I broke the plastic adjustment ring on a 1st Chair, unfortunately. That one has 2 plumbing clamps on it now!

Recording yourself and making videos: audio interfaces.

Hi David! What do you think of Audacity. I'm doing some work with a Christian horn band and we need to set all 8 of us up with something workable to exchange ideas. Another group I work with uses an older version of Cakewalk and the results have been very good, but we work together in a home...

Coated Remo Emperors vs Coated Evans G2

Every Evans Coated G2 I've had was considerably more open than an Emperor of the same make up. I've had Coated Emperors that were even deader than a Pinstripe. I guess I'm a single ply guy! If I were to use a 2 ply I'd use a Pinstripe,,,,and would use a clear to get some of the tone back.

Worst stage you ever played on.

In high school I had to fit my kit on a picnic table. I remember doing the gig but I don't remember how I got away with it....many lumpy and uneven stages over the years. If you had a 4 legged throne, or 4 legged anything you were in serious trouble!

Are 18"-22" deep Bass Drums doomed to be completely undesirable?

The thing that made me go longer (in 1983) was the sound of the rope tension drums on the street. Honestly, I never play my drums open so it is all a bit moot. Play what you want to play and what feels good to you. I own an old Rogers 14x22 and a Tempus 18x22 and the Tempus definitely has a...

Live From My Drum Room With Bill Gibson!

This is great coverage of these players. Thanx a lot for doing this! You should be making money for these,'s so well done. I've heard/seen a lot of weird Zoom flicks, but yours are very clean and professional looking.

    Tamed My BOB

I use a World Max 5.5x14 on 75% of everything I do. Its plenty (good enough) It sounds like a brass snare...that's all. My drum is every bit what the Ludwig is.

dino danelli and the rascals 1969

Eddy isn't even near a mic. If you're a singer you notice these things...but there are some live takes out there. This isn't one of them. Dino certainly knows his own fills.

    Flat Bearing Edges?

I only know that when trimming some shells I have bench tested some of the them before making the edge and they tuned right up with almost full tone. I, personally don't like a sharp edge; there has to be some meat there so I go with the typical 45 to the interior and a 1/4 round at the outside...

Tama First Chair Throne Glide Rider Hydraulix vs Roc Nitro

I highly recommend the Pearl top of the line..."Roadster". Its got a great lock down on the post. It can swivel or be stationary.

    Beater Patch Recommendations?

If your beater is hitting off center you could always revolve the head. In the 70's I used to have to do that because I had about 60 pars hitting me from out front. You could feel the heat on that head on a summer night. I would also flatten the drum out so that its parallel with the floor; you...

Bands With More Than One Drummer

As far as the Allman Bros. are concerned, I always looked at Butch as the straight man with J Johnny being the comedian. I think that two headed 18" bass drum is one of most characteristic sounds of the early Allmans. J is breaking it up big time with both heavy on the ride patterns...and...

How Do You 1-Up, 1-Down Players Tune Your Toms?

There is no need to worry about the key of the tune verses the rough pitch of the toms. The main reason is there is about a half step jump when you first strike the drum with any you're already playing with an inconsistent pitch off the heads. This is especially true if you have a...

Joe, What era is that? I didn't know they used that particular edge, slanted toward the inside.
