    Vintage MIJ Sets, Including Stencils!

Nice. I also had that set in my teens about 40 years ago. I loved mine. I dare say it sounded "Gretsch-y", albeit quieter. A very dry knock. I agree about the ergonomics, too. I had other, "better" sets at that time but played this one a lot, just because it felt so good to play. (Not my...

    Your BEST Cymbal?

Sounds like a great one, halldor. Seven years IS a long time.

15" Hi-hat thin top to mix and match

There tend to be quite a few thin orphan 15” old A’s available at any given time on eBay, Reverb, etc. Any era can contain gems, but I tend to prefer the 50’s and 60’s versions as they tend to be a bit thinner. I use my mismatched 15” old A’s 99% of the time.

OT - Learning a second language in your sixties.

My wife and I honeymooned in France. I decided that I would learn basic French before going. (I think it's just common respect to learn the basics of the language of your host country before spending any significant time there.) I used one of those CD/book courses and I listened to it in my...

    Detuning only some lugs???

I do this sometimes. It can provide a certain proportion of attack, pitch, and sustain that is unobtainable with even tensioning. I do think/agree though, that if the tensions are too disparate, the head will wrinkle and that could certainly cause some damage. My bass drum is almost always...

    Your BEST Cymbal?

I imagine that this would play quite well with the thin Trads. A drier voice, but a similar overall character?

No kidding! A 21” at 1240 is tin foil. I’d love to hear that one.

    Your BEST Cymbal?

Thanks, jb. The ride is nice and dry, or maybe semi-dry, and it has a lot of depth and complexity. Matt calls this one of his "old K style" cymbals. And when Matt decides to make a cymbal that sounds like an old K, he generally knocks it out of the park. Here's the set up for the session...

    PBS American Masters

One of the best, if not the best show on TV. I'll keep an eye out for the one on Doc. Thanks

What is your BEST cymbal? Mine? 22" Matt Nolan Ride. Just a joy to play. Here's a track I recorded outside a few months back with my group using this ride.

    OT: What's for dinner?

Great stuff, k50. The lemon and the sole would have me thinking white Burg, but the pomegranates? Maybe Chateauneuf Blanc? Champagne?
