    Great recorded drum sounds

One album I always thought had great drum sounds is the Bar Kays’ Soulfinger. (Oddly, the title song has mediocre drums but most of the rest of the album is awesome.) Looked up Drummer Carl Cunningham and found out he died in the Otis Redding plane crash when he was only 18. He was truly...

    That’s spectacular.

    Great recorded drum sounds

Really just talking about the recorded sound: well tuned kit, mics, mic placement, eq/comp, etc... not necessarily the performance. Tracks where the drums leap out of a nice set of speakers. :)

    Great recorded drum sounds

One of my favorites that isn’t on the list is Incredible Bongo Band’s Apache. Jim Gordon is one of my favorite drummers and I can’t think of any recording that has a better bass drum sound than this:

    Great recorded drum sounds

Matt the bass player here again. I found this page with a list of some really great recorded drum sounds. Some really great tracks I had not heard before, especially David Axelrod stuff and Marva Whitney. What are some of ya’lls favorites and must listens...

    Detuning only some lugs???

Thanks everyone for all the great responses. I gave it a try and, I can happily report, my drum shell did NOT implode and fold inwards into a pile of plywood splinters and mylar plastic. It made a dramatic and awesome difference in the sound that seems like it would be very useful for some...

    Detuning only some lugs???

Just watched a video by Nick V at SW where he suggests detuning three lugs on a tight snare to give it a different less overtone sound. I am new to drums, so please forgive the noob question. But it seems like having drastically uneven tension might be potentially damaging to the drum head or...

    Bassist Branching Out to Drums

I too am a bass player that just bought a drumset. My band’s rehearsal space and recording setup is in my basement. When covid hit, I found myself recording drum tracks to play along to. It wasn’t very long before my drummer came to pick up his kit and started me on a search for a replacement...

    "Amie" Pure Prairie League

It sure takes me back. Mostly because their current lead singer Donnie Lee bought my Lexus SC400 from me. So, this song makes me think of that car. I loved that car, but whatcha gonna do?

Buddy and Louie talk Gadd and Bonzo

He may have been referring to the Timpani and the gong maybe? Its entirely possible BR saw Zeppelin on a very off night. Although I am not one, I have heard some witnesses testify that Zeppelin live was a hit or miss affair. I would bet BR might have had a different opinion if he had spent...

    Noob drumhead question

I definitely want coated heads (for vintage vibey looks). So it looks like I’ll get ambassadors top and bottom. Is there a chance they will be too heavy for me? Are the Vintage Ambassadors a little thinner? Might those be a better choice for tops? Thank you all for your help!!! Ive listened...

    Noob drumhead question

Thanks guys. I play very lightly, thats why I thought thin single ply would be good for me. If someone plays a little too hard on thin heads, will it just destroy them?

    Noob drumhead question

Hello Matt the bass player back to ask for guidance from real drummers. Thinking of getting new heads for my Tama swingstar 12, 13, 16. Thinking of getting Diplomat skyntones for batter and evans reso 7 coated for bottoms. Is there any reason these won’t go well together? Should I just get the...

    Elbow pain from ride

I wasn’t struggling keeping up with the tempo, I was struggling with waking up in the morning with a very sharp pain in my joint. ;) But realistically, I have only been playing drums for a few weeks, so I am certainly struggling with virtually every element of drumming.

    Elbow pain from ride

Again, thank you all for the responses. I have moved my ride over the second tom so I can make a nce pistol grip and still keep my wrist straight. After several hours of bouncing triplets at 260 bpm, I have no elbow pain. Now I just need to learn to coordinate some left hand snare comping...

    Elbow pain from ride

No, I have no delusions of becoming a drummer at my age. Just a bass player trying to have some fun and stay musical during pandemic. After reading everyone’s responses it became clear that I needed to move the ride so I can point a pistol grip at it with a nice straight wist and without...

    Elbow pain from ride

Almost all tendon pains can be fixed by adjusting your playing technique to avoid the movement that is causing the issue. Its nothing to be afraid of, just part of the process of learning how to play any instrument.
