    Gretsch snare drum family photo

Tonight I gathered all of my Gretsch USA snare drums together for a family photo.

Did Santa Bring You Some Cool Piece of Music Gear for Christmas?

My bride usually asks me what I want for Christmas about a month before. This year she said that she came up with a fun idea without my input. I'm guessing that for once it will not be music related. What surprises do you think will be under YOUR tree this year.

Ludwig Copper Phonic followed me home...

A good friend of mine has one of these and swears by it. I stumbled upon one for a good price and couldn't help myself.

Two shell banks instead of eight different kits?

Currently I have eight drum sets. I need to down size as I'm out of room, but I don't want to loose the versatility that I have. So... I've decided to expand two of my kits into shell banks and sell the kits that will be redundant. I have a 2008 DW Collector's Series kit in broken glass...

    Kelly SHU microphone mount

I've been using a Kelly SHU mount in my bass drum for years with great success. Recently they came out with a mounting method to install the Kelly SHU in floor toms and run the wiring though the vent. I ordered my new Gretsch USA Custom kit with this in mind, I had Gretsch install a second...

I'm going to gig my new Gretsch kit tonight for the first time.

This past January I ordered a set of Gretsch USA Customs, they came in a couple of weeks ago. I set them up outside, and have them dialed in. Tonight I will be gigging them for the first time. I'll report later. In the meantime, here are a couple of photos of the kit.

DW Super Solid Maple Super-Sonic Snare Drum

I'm curious about the DW Super Solid Maple Super-Sonic Snare Drum. The idea of a "Dynasonic" like snare system being mated to a solid maple shell is intriguing to me. Yes, it is pricey, but it does sound like a great idea to this drummer. Do any of you own one, or have you played one?

Snare drums, I like modern AND vintage.

I have not sat down and counted them in a while, but I'm guessing that I currently have upwards of 25 snare drums these days. I notice that a lot of people who own a bunch of snare drums lean heavily toward vintage or modern. My current line up includes vintage Slingerland Radio Kings, a vintage...

I buy the same finishes again and again.

A few weeks ago I posted the question, "How many kits have you owned in your lifetime?" It was sort of fun to sit down and figure out how many I've owned and what they were. Wow, looking at my own results, I made a weird discovery. I keep buying the same finishes. My very first kit was blue...

How many drum sets have you owned in your lifetime?

I sat down today and counted how many drum sets I've owned over the years, the number is eighteen. Currently I own six, number seven is on the way. That will bring my lifetime total to nineteen. I have not counted kits that I've bought to flip. I know there are guys here who have owned lot more...

    I am sort of startled...

At one point I owned nine kits at one time, storage was an issue. I cut back to five, and currently own six kits again. That is a manageable number for me. In any case, I decided to write down all of the kits that I've owned in my lifetime. I was stunned to realize that even if you don't count...

    I was out of space...

This past year I sold one kit and bought three. I was out of room and sort of frustrated, trying to figure out what to sell to make room. Today I received a text from a friend who manages a Guitar Center. Someone sold them a kit and he thought it was something that I'd really like. He was...

Crazy idea? I need an opinion.

I've been wanting a Remo Mondo snare for a while. It seems like it would be an interesting adition to my percussion rig. They are not too easy to find and are sort of expensive new, considering that it isn't something that I'd use all of the time. However... Remo makes a 14 djembe with a Mondo...

    Cool photo shoot story...

Today "Hellin Back", our rock and soul cover band had a photo shoot as we needed some professional shots for our promotional materials. Full disclosure, I hate doing these. In forty years of gigging I have more been involved in too many of these that despite good intentions did not go well...

    I have a confession...

When I was a kid everyone that I knew owned, or wanted to own a set of Ludwigs. For some reason back then Slingerland was always the brand calling my name. Over the years I've owned a lot of Slingerland kits, I've owned a bunch of Gretsch kits, I've owned a couple of Rogers kits, I own a set of...

I picked up another Slingerland kit.

I picked up a set of 1966 Slingerlands in Silver sparkle today. I had the crazy idea of using them for my gig this Saturday. They are in nice condition overall, but really dirty. The rims cleaned up easy, as did the shells. The lugs are coming out okay, but not perfect. I may pick up different...

WTB Leedy Slingerland era Snare drum blue

I bought a really beautiful set of 1964 Leedy drums in the sparling blue glass finish back in 2008. I'm still looking for a Slingerland era Leedy snare drum to match it. It's a long shot, but I won't know if I don't ask.

    Stage wear

I play in several different projects. I have over the years worn all sorts of garb on stage, from formal to casual. Whatever makes sense for the gig is what I do. In any case, I believe that performers should dress different than the audience that they are performing for. I play in a band...

Removing Remo logo from bass drum head

I ordered a Slingerland logo from Bentley's drum shop to make my 1965 Gene Krupa 1N kit look authentic. The logo looks great! I went to remove the Remo logo from the brand new smooth white coated Ambassador with nail polish remover, like I've done a bunch of times before. Nothing is happening...

I just bought a clean Slingerland kit

I recently picked up a clean set of 1965 Slingerlands, including the hardware. The kit is in great condition overall, I just needed a few small things to make it right. I needed rubber tips for the floor tom legs, I found those. I needed a 6mm sleeve for the cymbal stand, I found that. What has...
