I'm not a big podcast listener, but this guy have some amazing interviews!

The Premier one with Mike Ellis is very absorbing, if you're a Premier/Beverly/Olympic fan.

    Ludwig chrome plating rumor

This clip has everything to do with plating and nothing to do with drums, but it's still fascinating to watch real craftsmen at work if you're into that kind of thing and have half an hour to kill: DB5 bumper re-chroming

    sold '28 ludwig black beauty

My heartfelt commiserations, I really hope you got what you were asking for it. At least you've loved and lost, better than just lusting after one like most... ...at least hopefully it's better. :) Hot, sweet tea and a blanket - doctor's orders.

    Ludwig chrome plating rumor

That sounds about right. I watched a surprisingly absorbing YT video on plating, can't remember the details, but that definitely had two metals before the chrome - I think thick copper plating first to fill in surface blemishes (and copper loves to plate), I think nickel next and then the...

    Ludwig chrome plating rumor

Brilliant, LOL. Yeah, I'm eagerly awaiting another drum fettler series, but it didn't materialise last year. Hope Mike's okay.

    Ludwig chrome plating rumor

I also thought it might be a conductivity thing, but level of success seems to be down to the level of surface prep required. The very surface property that resists oxidisation so well also resists the plating process if it's not really well polished and cleaned with all sorts of nasty chemicals...

    Ludwig chrome plating rumor

Thanks M., Thanks for the clarification M., no buried treasure this time then ;). Great info though, couldn't remember the Della Porta name for the life of me! My 2000 is one of the lucky ones to have kept 95% of it's chrome, but I think it's down to how careful the owner(s) before have been...

Do I Want A Ludwig Jazz Fest?

Nice to meet you all by the way, I'm Dave. Been on the forum about three years, but never knew enough to contribute much. Always felt like I'd be asking stupid questions! Great place though, you're all extremely generous with your knowledge. Cheers

    That's gorgeous, lovely job.

Do I Want A Ludwig Jazz Fest?

Thanks for the info K.O., much appreciated - with it's missing damper and it's 5.5 depth, maybe the shell is old WFL too and it's not really a jazz fest at all! More a Frankenfest perhaps.

Do I Want A Ludwig Jazz Fest?

Translates to, restored with original wrap. Looks awfully shiny to me, now I'm wondering should I take a punt on it myself...

    book on Italian vintage drums

Am I correct in assuming that it's only available in the original Italian language?

Do I Want A Ludwig Jazz Fest?

However, if anyone of you kind and knowledgeable people could point me in the direction of where I might begin to try to find a set of Jazz Fest NOB hoops of my own, I'd be eternally grateful. I have a lovely pre-serial KB in a remarkably intact black/gold duco. It has it's NOB lugs, but someone...

Do I Want A Ludwig Jazz Fest?

Not sure if this takes anyone's interest, think it's about $810 for my friends across the pond (plus shipping & whatever import duty you're subject to on goods from EU). https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174972198140?hash=item28bd27dcfc:g:hjIAAOSwZg9g41-i Looks like offers are possible too... looks...

    Ludwig chrome plating rumor

I agree, I would have dismissed it out of hand as an urban myth had I heard it recounted by anyone other than a Premier expert like Mr. Ellis with his close acquaintances formerly of the Leicester factory. But, to be fair, I don't think he put any weight behind it being anything other than an...

    Ludwig chrome plating rumor

Does anyone see updates to really old threads? In case they do, there's a rumour I can add to the mill around lovely chrome on some Ludwig shells - it's recounted by Mike Ellis on the Drum History podcast in delicious detail. In brief it goes that, having been impressed by the quality of the...

Has anyone have tips to converting a floor tom to a bass drum?

I second this. Turned out more expensive than it initially seemed though. The kit with riser, conversion floor tom legs and memory locks was pretty cheap, but the OPT1314 Optimount that I needed to make it work cost about €65 or so! It works a treat with my walnut 16x14 (that's 14x16 in dollars...

Finished my Ash with shells from Nordic

Fantastic, reminiscent of a Canopus ash snare finish I was admiring recently (dye was blue though perhaps). But I think these look better, a more natural asthetic to them. Some of the grain patterns are really spectacular there, especially on the bigger drums where that pattern has room to...
