So I LOVE Tama drums, but the Gretsch kit is a solid step above the Tama kit. The Superstar Classic is more on the same level as Gretsch Catalina Maple.
My guess is 1) it’s a common size so a lot of them were produced, and 2) more of them survived compared to all the 20’s and 22’s that have been broken over the years.
Depending on the end plate of the snare wires, ribbon can prevent the snares from laying perfectly flat against the head. I've noticed that on a few brands of snares.
Also, cord allows the snares to self align, so they will always end up straight. With cord, you have to get everything straight...
This is cool. Previously their used gear section was just links to Reverb. I'm going to try this out next time I sell gear online. I would rather work with SW than eBay or Etsy (Reverb).
There is a wide range of weights within the same model of stick. There are some YouTube videos of the VF factory showing them sorting by weight, and you can see the range that is within tolerance.
Length absolutely matters, but for me a lot of it is based on the diameter and profile of the stick. I'm most comfortable in the 16"-16.25" range for a 5A-5B diameter stick, and 16.25"-16.5" for a 2B diameter stick.
