Yup that seems to be the general wisdom.
But thinner shells give you a wider tuning range and much deeper bottom end. That’s why Sonor’s Ascent like had thick toms and thin bass drums. The concept didn’t really seem to catch on though.
If the G14 is thicker than the G12, which I think it is, then you may end up choking the smaller tom instead of allowing it to breathe and resonate and I don’t think you’re going to notice any real loss of volume if you go the other way around.
