    Non-drummer drummers appreciation

Jack white right! his drumming with the dead weather IS pretty decent, lots of syncopated playing. And Ludwig made him a super custom crazy-ass kit.

he makes us drummers look bad with his sublime groove and weird hi hat notes

    Non-drummer drummers appreciation

right! they're not just playing whatever rote stuff they have.. or what they're "supposed" to play... it's free-er composition in a way. Interesting when the non-dummer drumming version actually ends up being the released version which is the case for the artists I mentioned.

Fantasy Fill-In, One Song, Which Band?

Soul Sacrifice by Santana. Since we're allowed to fantasize also Rock & Roll by Led Zeppelin. The power and thrill of the opening fill and the power of giant amp stacks kicking in with the first crash would blow my head off.

    Non-drummer drummers appreciation

I enjoy getting inspiration from all drumming styles and sources and recently I've been very interested in listening to non-drummers who play the drums and actually do a good job at it. Definitely NOT a source for technical chops or coordination but to me an interesting source for phrasing...

Upgrading a Cheap Kit vs New Kit

I believe you. I don't want to get caught up in the particulars, but I saw a review that said that the Aluminum Wayfarers played a little louder than the Maple Wafarers. tbh I'm just believing that review at face value. I've just found that having a wood drum, thin shells and small sizes makes...

Upgrading a Cheap Kit vs New Kit

Thanks for the heads up. The maple one sold. The aluminum one is too loud / big. I want an ultra compact set 16" or 18" bd. I play with acoustic guitars and piano at least 50% of the time and my back hurts. Still searching. Thanks! :)

    Turkish Cymbals "INDe"

I read/heard in a few sources, and also observed in my own Mehmet cymbals that they seem to have a little pneumatic hammer work going in their cymbals, Paiste-style. They are mixing hand hammering with semi-machine hammering. I don't know to what extent and I don't know if they do that for all...

Upgrading a Cheap Kit vs New Kit

Yes I do…. Bosphorus, Paiste, Agop, Meinl, Murat Diril, a Timothy Roberts mod…. Cymbals are my weakness.

Upgrading a Cheap Kit vs New Kit

Indeed still searching for good deals. So many posts encouraging to buy used is actually awesome. For my $1500 budget I’d need to find a $1200 kit in the US (or local) to allow roughly $350 for taxes and shipping. Most of the time good deals get nixed because they don’t want to ship internationally.

Upgrading a Cheap Kit vs New Kit

Man I’m so jealous I’m really craving an Inde kit. The cost is actually not that bad. I did get a price quote for shipping to mexico last week. Amazing customer service btw. Total for a wafarer maple kit including import taxes and shipping was like $1815.

Minimal skills you say? Sounds like me. Tbh i’d be more comfortable leaving that to the pros. Have you done that yourself?

I’m not going to invest in that but you can get them hand-painted by traditional artisans. Looks pretty badass but end up looking more appropriate for like a lila downs show hehe.

It’s all maple shells. 6 ply (~4mm) in toms and 8 ply (~5mm) in the bass drum. Going thin.

Upgrading a Cheap Kit vs New Kit

haha I'm counting on that magic Mexican love. But hey beggars can't be choosers man, I'd much rather spend the money on a nice brand kit - Gretsch, Inde, George Way, etc. - used or new that checks every single box.... except that they are either not available here OR available at an outrageous...

Upgrading a Cheap Kit vs New Kit

Awesome post! interesting to hear about your experience trying to improve the sound of the BBs. I do agree, the workmanship on the edges straight from the factory ain't all that great and I feel that fixing that + the interior poly can change the sound quite a bit. Still the bottom line is...
