Paiste Giant Beat Multi: a Revelation

I’ve got a 24” Giant Beat and a 24” 2002 BB and a 24” Mastars JR Deep Ride. The GB is my favourite, I’m seriously thinking about getting a 26” GB. Ive only heard sound files so far, there’s a store a few hours drive away that has one. Next time I’m down there Im trying with a view to getting it...

    Pedals-strap, chain, direct drive

Sonor Perfect Balance with the strap, it’s the best pedal I’ve ever used. The fact it has a perfectly round cam is a logical thing for me, why would you want an offset cam? It’s like having an asymmetrical drill bit to my mind. That’s not your question though. I’ve used...

    A&F drops weight

I had 6000 series initially but had a couple of problems. Organising the flush bases for 4 cymbal stands was a pain and they are not significantly lighter than the 7000 series which are much more robust. I even bought a set of the 6000UL stands (cheap!) and found out why the guy was selling...

    A&F drops weight

I get that 100%. For me it’s not the weight of the drums it’s all the hardware. I use DW 7000 series in the main with (unfortunately) a a couple of 9000 series snare stands as the 7000s are not robust or manoeuvrable enough for 18lb snare drums. The Yamaha crosstown stuff I’m sure is great but...

best alternative snare drum metal; also, did you set it on fire?

Strangely enough I used to do a fire eating act in a band I was in. That was a long time ago , over 40 years. I could still do it I believe. In fact I’d rather do it now than play a drum solo. I’ll see what happens at our next gig Sunday when I spring it on them. Its all down to using the...

Your Opinions on 14X6.5 Brass Snare Drums

Nice drum. If it had to be your one and only snare not too many members here would be too unhappy.

best alternative snare drum metal; also, did you set it on fire?

I’ve got a Dunnett titanium 14” x 6.5” a beautiful drum. A modern classic. I’ve also got a Black Swamp Percussion14”x5.5” . It sounds different, much lighter and airier to the Dunnett, I use it on my quieter gigs. Every time I play them I wonder why I have any other drums. Loud (ish) and when...

    It’s still a good one.

Your Opinions on 14X6.5 Brass Snare Drums

The problem is pinning your budget (and hopes) on one drum. I’d beg borrow or steal any metal shell snares to try out first. A COB can sound great one night and as dull as ditchwater the next depending on the hall/stage of where you’re playing. Aluminium does not sound as bright but has ( to my...

Anyone gone from 22 or 24 to 20 bass drum?

Ive Tried every size just about, heres the list of my drum kits as best I can remember it! 20” 20” 22” 24” (long time !) 18” 18” 20” 20”20”20” So I’m a 20” guy for good now I’d say. Right size for depth and onstage volume, great with a mic

Who owns a gong or gong-like effect? Did you set it on fire?

I’d only do it under appropriate adult supervision

Who owns a gong or gong-like effect? Did you set it on fire?

No. Maybe a quick flare up if I was drunk at a barbecue at my house. And then only outside.

2002 Big Beat vs Giant Beat to mix with Old A’s.

I’ve got a 24” GB, BB and a JR Masters deep ride. I like them all and use them for different gigs with my band. The GB gets played most with the BB kept for really big rooms. I think either would work with possibly the BB edging it. The JR Masters is a killer ride cymbal, very clean ride ...

Who owns a gong or gong-like effect? Did you set it on fire?

I’ve never had one or even wanted one badly enough. Now that I’m in a band that absolutely doesn’t need a gong and in a house where I can’t think where to put it or when I’d hit it…. I’ve seen a 30” Gong I really fancy.

    Desert Island hi hats

Are the 17” SE 2002s? I’ve got a pair of 16” 2002 Big Beats and 16” Giant Beats which I love playing after years of 13”/14”. How do yo find them?

    A Paiste line up

Try the Paiste website player videos with good quality headphones. That will at least give you some idea of the differences between the ranges. The great or not so great thing ( depending on your opinion) is the consistency of Paiste. The way they are made makes for very small differences in the...

Is Premier the Slingerland of Euro drums?

C I saw a lot more artist activity as I was living in the UK….! Mitch Mitchell, Clem Burke, Phil Collins, Nick Mason, Nicko McBrain, Rick Buckler. I’ll have to google some other players. It’s a pity Ringo never got (or wanted) an upgrade to his Premier mahogany wrap kit. I still see a lot of...

Is Premier the Slingerland of Euro drums?

Not sure about the Rock endorsers for Slingerland . Late 70’s they had Bev Bevan from ELO and Nigel Olsson from Elton John, there’s two massive touring and recording acts globally. Phil Ehart from Kansas, Danny Seraphine from Chicago. Bill Ward from Sabbath , remember the massive white kit? Who...

    Desert Island hi hats

I’d say 15” Dark Energy just because they are so different to anything else I’ve played. Ask me next week and it’s my 16” Giant Beats. Great all round cymbals.
