    Is country drumming boring?

It shouldn't be about the drum part. For me it's always about the song. If a song isn't good I get quickly bored. If a song is great, I'm never bored playing the simplest of drum parts.

    Greyson Nekrutman reacts to Whiplash

He's reviewing the Greyson video, not the movie and presumably Greyson watched the movie. Regarding drama versus reality, I think people DO struggle to separate them. The Netflix series The Crown has received criticism from people who were either 'there' or know the Royals. I read a lot of not true...

    Gig Pay - Locked

I must say I'm surprised and a little shocked. Why is ANY discussion about how we get paid being shut down. This is a subject that impacts everyone who plays out, whether part timer or professional. As far as I'm concerned the discussion was being conducted by and large respectfully and everyone...

    Gig pay

Ever heard the phrase 'united we stand, divided we fall'? That's how collectivisation works, like unions. Wealthy entrepreneurs love it when employees just do things to suit themselves, their own circumstances. Someone mentioned above that a local promoter won't hire 'union' bands? Why? Because...

Exactly! My current N&C Horizon is the same set up.

    That's a three tom though - 12, 14 and 16"

    Three up one down

I think mostly people are using a 10" (or 8") tom closest to the hi-hat. It's tough to go three up starting with a 12". I've used this as my main set up for 35 years, but always starting with a 10" as tom 1. My hi-hat moves slightly left and my toms 2 and 3 are in the traditional position over...

    Ringo......

Yeah, well they started using the studio as a songwriting tool. They obviously also cut different short songs together to make one longer song. They were interested in tape loops too. You're right though, to make it work Ringo had to be super consistent in time and tone.

    Miles once said….

Seeing as Miles invented Jazz-Rock, and Sting hired Branford Marsalis, Jan Garbarek hired Manu Katche. Yes, not much Miles said was ever wrong.

    Ringo......

Obviously most people avoided cutting tape wherever possible. I think they mostly recorded songs 'over and over again' because due to being 4 track or 8 track tape machines they all had to nail their parts, not just the drums, or drums and bass. Also, they were typically writing as they went...

    Miles once said….

It's true. In general, all music influences other music, especially if you are open minded like Mikes Davis.

    Ringo......

Yes to all that BUT he came up with some very unique drum parts and orchestrations. Some might seem 'everyday' with 50 years of hindsight, but they were innovative and quite outlandish at the time. Also, this tacit agreement over 'modest chops' etc.. A lot of those Beatles songs are hard to...

    Roland TD-17KVX2 and EZdrummer 3

I can't answer specifics, but when I hooked up my Roland v-drums to trigger EZD3 I didn't touch any settings. Toontrack products usually work right our of the box with Roland v-drums. You just want the TD-17 to trigger EZdrummer 3 via midi right? So you want to see it as a midi controller, not...

    Walking snare???

I use a heavy DW 5000 snare stand. Maybe the lightweight stand isn't right for your snare playing style.

    Your personal gig dress code

Not at all. It signifies you take the music seriously, you respect the audience, you've made an effort. Looking like you just came in off the street does none of those things. Again, the Gadd picture is CLEARLY not the gig. I have worn all kinds of rubbish looks, comfortable for soundcheck on a...

Who owns only one set of cymbals?

I played K Zildjian for about 25 years, nothing else, used for live touring and studio. 13 or 14" hats, 22" Heavy Ride, Dark crashes from 17" to 20". Recently I switched to Istanbul Agop and started endorsing them. I am almost exclusively using 18"-20" Trad Medium crashes, a Mantra 22" ride and...

Bands that needed to hire another drummer to record one track because their drummer wasn’t getting it right

As I said, it was almost always an entire band of players that Becker and Fagen would switch out. We're talking top 5 studio drummers in the world, so it's not like any of them couldn't play a Dan song to the highest standard. It's just that Becker and Fagen were looking for some mysterious...

Bands that needed to hire another drummer to record one track because their drummer wasn’t getting it right

I think the cases of a drummer being replaced on one song because they can't cut it is pretty rare. Much more often it's the band drummer being replaced for a whole album, or most of it. Steely Dan in their heyday pretty much recorded every song with different rhythm sections, it wasn't just...
