I've done repairs on that type of finish. I dissolved a piece of similar matching finish in a acetone and painted it into the crack. Followed by wet sanding. Works great.
Yes, I did. They are pristine with the exception of really ratty looking bass hoops that were not Roger's. Also, there are several Fullerton era collet noses and a broken tom mount, not disclosed by the seller. Great drums but not a fun transaction.
Around 1944, the metal restrictions were relaxed. Slingerland began selling drums again but announced that all drums would have wood hoops until metal was available again. Cymbals were not available, either.
