    Ludwig Breakbeats

A friend of mine has a kit. It was a bit problematic to tune in the beginning. I told him to check the edges and they were all over the place so he had the kit re-edged by a pro. Sounds great now.

Serious snare question - The actual sonic difference between 5 and 6.5

I have owned three 5x14” Supra’s from different time periods, tried every possible tuning and disliked them all equally. Same with Acro’s. Cranking the bottom head was the first thing I tried.

Serious snare question - The actual sonic difference between 5 and 6.5

Well, for example I can´t stand the 5x14" Supra but I love the 6.5x14". The 6.5" gives me richness, body and musicality while the 5" is all "splat" and high end brittle crack. There are very few 14" snare drums I like under 6.5" depth. But, there are exceptions. The afore mentioned N&C piccolo...

    OT rant, what's yours?

I have nothing to rant over and it’s making me f***ing mad!

    Your latest cymbal purchase.....

Haven’t owned or played a 16” crash since the last century but recently my ears went looking for that sound. So finally a 16” Meinl Byzance thin crash brilliant made it home along with a 19” medium thin crash brilliant. The Byzance Brilliant series crashes are some if the most versatile crashes...

    1920s Tension Rods?

The Ludwig tension rods from at least until the 70’s were solid brass. I restored a 70’s Black Beauty Super-Sensitive for a friend and he asked me to change out the rods for new ones. The chrome was no longer present on the threads but they were smooth as butter so I just cleaned them and told...

How often do you clean up the saw dust from your practice area?

You mean you’re still in the 60’s? 8) Hit them any way you like, like Danny Richmond did. He’s the reason I have a serious hihat fetish going on. And to the OP; once or two times a month.

Tama Starclassic Maple or Gretsch renown?

Not any more since a few years.

Tama Starclassic Maple or Gretsch renown?

I have owned both and the Tama Starclassic Maple is way more explosive and open sounding. No real comparison there. The Renowns are nice and cheaper but not in the same league.

The Ten Drum Sets That Changed Music Forever!

Hmm... what did I miss? Never heard of such a drum. They are most likely referring to the 14x6.5" Tama Bell Brass AKA "The Terminator"

Can you play a roll (and how important are they)?

When in doubt, roll :-) Yes, I practiced them to death as a teenager. Thanks to my classically trained teacher. I sometimes, not often though do fills only doing rolls.

The Least favourite snare you currently own

Believe me I know. I’ve tried so hard to like it; swapped hoops, wires, heads etc. Same with the LM400. I’ve owned a few, first I thought I had a dog, sold it, bought another; same story x 2. Played a few others; new ones, vintage ones.... No dig.

The Least favourite snare you currently own

Been there, done that. Still don’t like it and I really wanted to. Same with the LM400. The 402 on the other hand... love it!

What's your favorite auxillary percussion item?

The Meinl snare tambourine. Dampens and gives a mild sound that adds a bit of crunch to the snare sound.

AC/DC Drummer Claims He Started With Tom Jones. What's Up Pussycat?

Yup, even my first drumteacher. He was friends with Bob Grauso since Bob was stationed at the US Navy base in Iceland. Grauso visited Iceland often since he made a lot of friends in the music scene here. That kit is actually the kit I took lessons on.

    Tell me about walnut characteristics

I have a Tama Star Walnut kit and a matching 6ply, 5mm Walnut snare. That snare is a sleeper. Huge tuning range, crisp with gorgeous mids and lows behind the rather bright tone. Very rich and thick sounding and extremely articulate. It comes with die-cast hoops but I use 2.3mm triple flange. It...

    Snareweight M1

I like the M1 but I always use it folded. It gives just the right amount of dampening (minor), just to get the brightest overtones out. But this is by far my fav dampening device. Easy to control the amount if dampening. The cloth lifts when you strike so you get full sound but with a...

The Least favourite snare you currently own

My Ludwig Acrolite. Looks beautiful on the shelf, that’s why I keep it but it sounds like crap.

Why are floor toms usually in square sizes?

As to why? I don’t know. It’s just always been that way. My floor toms are all one inch shallower than the diameter (by order) expect the 18” which is 16” deep. I find them easier to tune then square sized ft’s. Then again, there is always an exception.
