    Chico Hamilton even used a single-headed bass drum apparently at some point. Concert toms to my ear ssound a little bit like double-headed drums with the reso at a lower tension. A concert tom has a lower fundamental tone than a double-headed drum with both heads the same.

    Here's another aspect: with a non-rimshot center hit, you hear a lot more of the fundamental tone. A rimshot stifles that part of the sound quite a bit. So, if you play mostly rimshots, a few inches of depth less or more might not make as much difference soundwise as if you play non-rimshot...

    Regarding snare issue.

    I've seen brass swivel nuts/receivers lose their threadings through high tension. You'll see some little brass pieces come out, and the t-rod doesn't tighten anymore. If there's a just a resistance against the t-rod, tuning gets more difficult, but as long as you feel the t-rod getting tighter...
