Man, Questlove made a great film!!! Footage from the Harlem Cultural Festival in 1969, which hadn’t been seen since it was filmed. Great music, historical context, and lots of fantastic vintage kits!

Stevie Wonder plays drums, and then later we see Max Roach play his Meazzi Hollywood kit.

in theaters and on Hulu.

Great reviews in The New Yorker and N Y Times this week. We’re going to see it Sunday to celebrate. Max Roach and Greg Errico included!

I watched part of it this evening. I ended up scanning it to get to the music. Only to have the performances interrupted with more historical musings. I got three fourths through it and just shut it off.

I made the mistake of thinking that it would be a cool music film.
It was not.

It is an historical look into the social pieces of the time … with a bit of music sprinkled in (which they would interrupt quite often to show more history).

Had I sat down to watch an historical sociological documentary, I’m sure I would have enjoyed it. Looked to be extremely well researched and edited.
But I didn’t.
I sat down to watch a music documentary with the expectation of seeing entire uninterrupted song performances.

My fault for entering this one without proper perspective … woulda been nice to have had a heads up on it. I love a good history documentary.
I’m sure I’ll revisit this one in time. But not with the expectation of watching some cool band performances.

what the heck sorta drums is Stevie playing..Radio Kings?.
or..
;look like they may have been Gladys Knight's drummers drums..

Her drummer is up behind the Pips. I think Stevie’s drums were to the left of them.

The Rogers logo'ed WMP set that B.B. King's drummer was using (and later some others seemed to be on the same set) was an R-360.

What was the intent of the film beyond the music?

So I saw these Kits go by

Stevie Wonder….Ludwig bass and maybe floor, rack looked like a radio king with spade bracket
Chambers Bros…Ludwig maple thermagloss dbl bass kit well worn
Red sparkle Gretsch dbl toms kit , toms on stand
Max Roach on his Hollywood kit!
Rogers WMP 4 piece reported by K.O. on DF to be an R-360
Camco 4 piece in that unusual satin flame wrap was sort of green-blue, or grey, charcoal moire? played by several folks
Greg Errico’s black Ludwig kit with 6.5x14 Supra , kit with the stick-ons and his sideways set up

That Rogers could be seen pretty well when B.B. King was playing. It had the Ludwig-like lugs and the hardware wasn't swivo stuff...R-360. I was thinking "geez you'd think B.B. King's drummer could get a decent endorsement deal with somebody for a more pro level set". But the same set (appeared to be anyway) turned up again later in the film with other drummers so I suspect it was a backline set.
