10”x8” vs 12”x8” vs 13”x9” Tom

10’s started to show up more frequently in the late 1970’s early 1980’s. A lot of guys were using 10/12/14. They tuned them in close intervals or had the 14 tuned low to get the 10 below the pitch of the snare. I find this combo to be troublesome because the 10 for me wants to be higher than the snare. I guess this because I use 12/14 most often and I’m used to those drums in a specific register.

I use a back line kit that a lot of rock and blues guys play on. They use the 10/16. The 10 is always tuned real low. Out of its range. The heads get destroyed.

I use a 13/14 combo at school on one of the teaching kits. It’s tough to get good intervals between those two sizes.

12x8 since i started playing, but i did audition 10,s which were limited on their own and 13,s with a 22 are difficult to position. Since i prefer a 22 over a 20 the 12" has always done it all for me.

A 12” is great but a 13” does it all.

Ludwig Classic Oak.

Originally got it as the Ludwig/Revival Drum Shop collab "Revette" set (https://www.revivaldrumshop.com/products/drums-ludwig-revette), which is 18x12 kick with 12x8 and 14x14 (like the old Ludwig Jazzette kits). Liked it so much that I had them do a 22x12 and 16x14 in the same setup. Revival was great -- they're exactly the same as my original Revette, which means a custom paper badge inside (with the kit serial number even matching my original), a non-standard badge (gold keystone badge, when the Oaks generally get a silver keystone), and 9mm fittings everywhere (9mm gull wing spurs and 9mm floor tom legs).

I was in Portland 2 months ago for the first time. Visited Revival drum shop. The portlander 20/14/12 kit was setup and I played it at the store, and just Wow, what a fat sounding kit with great tone, I was really really impressed. Maybe Jose Medeles had tuned the drums beautifuly but that kit was at another level good.

The 9x13 is the rack tom (or small tom, as we called it in the stone age) that all others are based around. It covers a lot of territory. When I played in big band jazz groups, the 8x12 just didn't cut it. I do like the punch of a 9x12, though. I once had a 10" concert tom, but soon traded it.

Yup -- the Portlander is fab too. Same shells and setup as the Revette, just in the bigger sizes w/ the brown finish vs the black. Big fan of the stuff they're doing. I also picked up the 15x6.5 "Auditorium" collab they did with Ludwig (https://www.revivaldrumshop.com/col...s/snare-ludwig-classic-oak-6-5x15-antique-oak), and the Revival series collab with Cymbal and Gong (I have the 15" hats and 22" ride) -- really love the work they're doing up there!

Yup just a bigger bass drum and different finish than the Revette kit. Very nice looking and sounding drums!!!
