10’s started to show up more frequently in the late 1970’s early 1980’s. A lot of guys were using 10/12/14. They tuned them in close intervals or had the 14 tuned low to get the 10 below the pitch of the snare. I find this combo to be troublesome because the 10 for me wants to be higher than the snare. I guess this because I use 12/14 most often and I’m used to those drums in a specific register.
I use a back line kit that a lot of rock and blues guys play on. They use the 10/16. The 10 is always tuned real low. Out of its range. The heads get destroyed.
I use a 13/14 combo at school on one of the teaching kits. It’s tough to get good intervals between those two sizes.
