Im not familiar if this is common these days, but are they being offered as standard or is it a custom order?

I would say it's been the standard for decades. I have 6 floors and three if them are 14's They are all 8 lug drums, dating from 20 years ago to new. I had 14 floors back in the 80's and 90's that were all 8 lug. I think the 10 lug version is seen more in the custom world.

All my 14s have 8 lugs top and bottom. Rogers, Camco, and J-M.

Norm rather than exception I'd say. Now if it's a budget model or a 14" rack tom it has more chances to have only 6 lugs.

Shows you how much I know!!!...I,ve always played 16",8 lug floor toms, never bothered with 14,s and made the assumption that small floor toms don't NEED 8 lugs. My thinking is it would choke the sound at lower tuning...and I feel 8 lugs dont look right to me ...too busy...…..thx for the education!

Most of my 14" have 8 lugs, but I have an early Milestone and Tempus fiberglass floor toms with 10 lugs. (Assuming Paul used their die-cast snare hoops on their floor toms back then) Zoom in on this Milestone 14" floor, 10 lugs a side with Milestone Hoops. ;-)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a ten lugged 14” FT. And I’ve had many...

Only 6 lug one I can think of is the original Ludwig Club Date.

Slingerland Stage Band has 8 even though its a budget single center lug model.

All my 14" floors (Ludwig, Gretsch, Slingerland) have eight lugs. The sole exception being two Ludwig club date floors which are six luggers.

As long as the floor tom has an equal number of lugs I can live with it. I had a 5 lugger MIT floor once & tuning it was even weirder than tuning a Gretsch rack tom!

Yup. For Ludwigs, Club Date floors had 6, regular line had 8. 60’s and 70’s 14” racks had 6, but now I’m seeing 8 on all the current production.

They did go through that period where they were putting entirely too many lugs on toms, so there are 10-lug power or square depth 14”s out there. Never seen one without Modular hardware, though.

It was weird because Ludwig started out with 6 lug 10x14 toms mounted toms and I think 14" concert toms were the same but 14" floor toms had eight. Then when they introduced power toms they went to ten lugs on the 14" mounted toms but kept using eight on the 14" floor toms. Seemed to be no rhyme or reason to any of it.

I've converted a 13x14 Ludwig mounted tom into a floor tom but I redrilled it for 8 lugs because it just looked too "busy" with ten on it.

8 lugs is pretty much standard, though less expensive kits have been known to have 6 lug 14" toms. My old Tama Rockstars are 6 lugs. Some of the older Stage Customs are 6 lugs. Mapex Meridian Birch kits have 6 lugs, though the Meridian Maples had 8 lugs, go figure.

Maybe the 10 lugs gets more bark out of a 14” power tom? I don’t know, never played one. Just thinking 8 vs 10 lug snare drums and how that changes sound/feel. Could help make that big rack tom feel less mushy. I won’t knock it till I try it haha.
