Terry William's Ludwigs he used for Meat Loaf and Dire Straits are hard to beat: 14, 15, 16 out front over the 22" bass drum!! Power toms, so 1" shorter than square!
How did he manage to play these?? How????
They sounded great though, me thinks
I’d name that kit “ Floor Tom “

The very non-famous drummer using this kit was running 14x10, 15x12, and 16x16 toms on this day.

Me, recycled 12x15 marching tenor, Ludwig 3ply, white inside, matches my 2pc. 1966 downbeat kick and rack. And it's bowties and cob. The ft matches the '61 jazzfest. Lucky find, from some school in SD.

15 inch toms were a product of the power tom age (80s and 90s). Initially 15 inch drums were associated with marching percussion. They also were part of concert tom setups, also known as melodic toms.
When drummers started experimenting with multiple toms, someone got the grand idea of adding a set of concert toms to a drum kit .... and the Ludwig Octaplus was born, along with other manufacturers multiple tom kits.
In the late 1980s it was common place to see drummers with kits that had 8 or more mounted (Rack) toms (including 15in toms), and several cymbals. Phil Collins for instance used 8,10,12,15,16,18 toms.
As people parsed down their kits and manufacturers focused on saving costs associated with the kits they offered, 14,15, and 18 in toms disappeared from the scene.
Today, in order to save on the cost of producing drum kits and drums, most manufacturers only offer kits in two flavors (Jazz and Rock) the Jazz kits have a smaller tom setup 10/12/14 and the rock kits larger 12/13/16. There is really no option in many cases to obtain various size drums unless one purchases them individually

John Bonham AND Carmine Appice both used 15" x 12" toms when Zep toured with Vanilla Fudge early in 1969. In fact, their drumsets were nearly identical:
Carmine has said in interviews that he got John his kit and it was a copy of Carmine's but with the left bass drum taken away.
