I have come across a 1977 Ludwig Classic set in gold sparkle. Sizes 20,12,14 with the matching 10 lug snare drum. The set comes with two of the straight cymbal stands, snare stand, Speed Kind pedal, Hi hat and Ludwig stool. There is also the original Ludwig cases as seen in the old Ludwig catalogs. The set is in very good condition. What do you think it is worth for me to make an offer?

Are you sure it isn't Gold Sparkle? Ludwig did not make orange sparkle drums at any point in the 70s. If the drums you're looking at are truly an orange sparkle then they would have to have been rewrapped.

Edit: you posted that picture while I was typing...that is Gold Sparkle. 12/14/20 is a "Downbeat" outfit which are generally desirable. 1977 is around the time of the switch from 3ply to 6 ply shells. Both are good drums but 3 ply would be more attractive to most people.

Looking closer at your picture that looks more like it's a 13/16/20 combination which doesn't line up with any of the catalog outfits. That doesn't make it "wrong" as a set of drums but probably would effect the desirability to some, tempering the value somewhat. 14x14 floor toms are typically worth more than 16x16. You'd want to check that out before making an offer. I'll leave it to others to throw out potential values but the sizes do matter.

Insptired use of a cymbal arm to hold the tom way up high.

Is that the snare that causes grown men to faint.
Could use that as a Bebop casuals gig set.

I'm with K.O. - that doesn't look like a 14" floor tom. I would want to confirm the drum sizes before I made an offer.

You Probably want to find out whether 3-ply or 6-ply shells.
Do the shells all match
The 20” bass drum is desirable, but the toms seem to go with a larger 22” drum - so there’s that.
Matching Snare with the kit is great! Hardware too.
Conservatively ball parking values:
300 - Hardware
400 - Snare
800 - Shell Pack (500 for the bass drum alone)
? - Drum cases

You could try knocking the price down for the non matching kit.
Love gold sparkle, good luck !

Well, that seems like a fair deal to me, but, up I'm up here in Canada where complete vintage kits like that are like hen's teeth

$1500 is a very fair price. It’s not the deal of the century nor are you over paying.

Offer $1200 and see if they will make a counter offer

I'm not good with ball-parking values but can say that is a very nice looking set. Just something classy and flashy at the same time with gold sparkle drums.

yes you're always a star with sparkle drums; kind of like the Monkee's.
