6 Ply Jazz Fest?

Starting a new project to build a Ludwig Jazz Fest Replica of sorts, except for using a 6 ply maple Ludwig marching drum hull for the 5 1/2” shell. I bought an additional great donor 15” marching drum with excellent bowtie lugs, P83 strainer and butt plate to use. The bat style muffler is on order, and I am using 2.3 triple flange hoops with an original Ludwig 20 wire snare. Black oyster pearl wrap when it’s all done. It won’t have the mahogany sound, but I’m hopeful it will sound good. I have a 5 1/2” Pioneer for sale and was able to try to duplicate the snare bed they were using back then.

Should be okay. I had an 80's B/O student model wrapped in plastic chrome. I took it off to reveal a 5 ply natural shell. I stained it and it sounded great. It had no re rings. I traded it only because I did not like the standard lugs. I scored a killer of Manhattan jazz hats for that $50 snare!

I have it together except for a vent hole, wrap, badge and muffler. It sounds really good in the middle but sounds bad moving away from the middle Hopefully, with the muffler and vent that will get better.

Installed the wrap today and put it together for fit it up and finish work. The keystone badge doesn’t really go with the 6 ply shells, but that’s what I’m putting on it.

I probably should have waited for a 3 ply, but I had this Ludwig maple 6 ply and thought it would sound good. I tried to find a 6 ply maple 5 1/2” that Ludwig made and couldn’t find where they ever did one.

I’m pretty excited about the way it sounds. I’ve got what I would call a medium tuning, and I really like it. The wrap came from Jammin Sam, my fourth order of B. O P., and they all look pretty close.

Looks great . Why is muffler lever hanging down?

In that photo, the internals to the muffler were not installed. With the 6 ply shell, the Canopus threaded shaft is really too short. I left out a black nylon spacer and the muffler works in all three positions. There is an additional attaching screw that is not in that picture.
