For no particular reason I decided to make a list of all the drum shops in the US. The criteria were:
  1. Drum and percussion stores only, not general music stores. Basically, if their web site showed a wall of guitars, I didn't consider them a drum shop even if they had "Drum" in the name.
  2. Must have a physical store open to the public with regular, posted hours of operation. If visiting the store requires an appointment, the store isn't on the list.
  3. Must be a retailer, meaning they sell new merchandise from a variety of manufacturers. So a drum builder who has a store but only sells their own drums or a store that sells only used gear wouldn't be included unless they also sell new heads, sticks, hand percussion, etc.
So far the list includes a total of 69 dedicated drum and percussion shops in 27 states. That's one for every 5 million or so people in the country.

Is there a drum shop in your town or state that isn't listed here? Do you know of any on this list that are no longer in business or that no longer have a storefront? How many have you personally visited? (I've been to four)

You can add Dubs Drum Basement in Dublin CA. I’ve been to four on your list.

There’s also A Drummer’s Tradition, in San Rafael CA...and I believe Mike’s Drum Shop in Santa Barbara CA is still here too

Vic’s in Chicago is unfortunately now gone though

I think I’m at about 6 or 7 visits

I've been to (and spent money at) East Coast and Baltimore Drum. Is the Hagerstown shop still in business?
You should add Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center to your list, as they have a drum department that is as serious as a drum only store, like DCP.
Outside of Maryland, I've only been to Maxwell's NYC.

You missed Cadence Music in Rochester, NY. Percussion only.
And Drum Center Portsmouth is in North Hampton, NH.
That's the only one on your list that I've been to.
I'm pretty sure there's a drum shop in Buffalo, NY as well but they might not be in business anymore.
OK... now that you added Cadence I've been to two.

I’ve been to 5 of the shops but, I’ve purchased online from 19 of them. Let’s Keep supporting these shop owners and even in your prayers, it’s still very, very tough out there.

I didn't know until you posted that Lone Star Percussion was moving to Monrovia (fifteen minutes from me). Thanks for the heads up on that one.

Added A Drummer's Tradition, removed Vic's. I didn't add Mike's yet because it looks like they just offer lessons.

I've been to maybe 7 of the above. Also, Baltimore Drum, Keith Larsen's shop, which I have been to more than 8 times, should be listed.

You can add:

Wood & Weather, MA
Village Drum Shoppe, RI

Both do a lot of vintage drums.
Wood & Weather looks like an awesome shop. I didn't include them, though, because according to their website they're only open by appointment.

Village Drum and Music is another cool place, but it's not a dedicated drum shop. They sell string instruments and electronics, too.

I’m surprised Hawthorne’s in Pennsylvania made the list based on your criteria.

I thought that was one of those underground, nondescript, no visible signage, have to know a guy who knows a guy, arrange a meeting by leaving coded messages in the third stall along and agree to be driven out to the secret location while blindfolded, specialty boutiques.

I still haven’t been to visit Keith in Baltimore. Did he change his name from Mid Atlantic Drum? Somehow I missed that.
Yes, Drums On Sale is still alive and well. That was my local drum shop (45 minutes from) where I grew up so I have been there and bought a lot from them. Still ordering from them, a couple times in the past few months in fact.
Does Steve Weiss Percussion not have a retail location for customers to visit? I’ve only dealt with them online. My best guess (including Weiss) is that I’ve visited 5 of these and ordered from another 10-12 online.
BTW @Johnny K the criteria that Mike stated would have to leave out Washington Music Center. They are definitely a full line store and have been known for guitars, PA, band and orchestra, etc for a LONG long time.

Ah, I see now. Google says they have regular, but it looks like they're located inside another, full-line music store, so that's probably the hours of the larger store. Also, it looks like it's vintage only. So I'll take them off the list. This list, anyway.
