I second the Zildjian A Custom fast crashes or thins. The 18" I had was about 1280 gm and sounded almost like a 50's Zildjian. You could crash that as softly as you liked and it was still a "crash" though subdued.
Most any thin to paper thin 50's to 80's Zildjian will do the same thing. I've had 18" 1970's as light as 1260 gm that were amazing light touch crashes. The A Customs are still be made and easy to obtain. You don't have
to buy the "fast crash" which is often more money. The regular thin line (not stamped) are often the same weights as "fast crashes" and perform identically.

I agree with the dream bliss recommendations, I ran FOH at a club for around a year pre-covid and dream bliss crashes were always polite.

I use an 18" early Crescent (pre Sabian) ...... doggone it, forgot the series name. Very thin and bendable, lovely lush crash that opens and closes quickly. Still find I have to grab it real fast (!) to mute in quiet settings ..... my bad!

19 Kerope is a lovely model but taps out at a lower than normal volume. It’s also a GREAT ride cymbal at low volumes

I have a 19” Paiste Giant Beat thin. It opens to a beautiful crash with a light touch. It can get loud.... but that’s where technique comes into play. Also if I’m worried about volume I tend to use open hi-hat crashes rather than a crash cymbal for a lot of accents.

besides a 10" splash, quietest crash is side sticking a flat ride.

I'll throw in a plug for a Paiste Signature Traditionals 16" Thin Crash. Beautiful, on the quiet side, and quick decay.

I wanted to follow up here with what “quiet” crash I finally chose.

Thank you all for your great ideas. I did stick within my original Zildjian/Sabian lovemarks.

18 inch Kerope at around 1300 grams.

Bought used, but basically new. I think 18 a good size since it has lower fundamental tone (implied quietness) and can be lightly ridden or used for short bursts of more washy ride patterns. Talking low to medium low volumes. (I often just play with one ride and one crash). Would not work for me as a single cymbal for a bikini kit. The wash gets quite Kenmore rinse cycle pretty quickly.

But it is indeed a fine crash. I compared the Kerope to an 18 inch K Custom Dark crash and 18 inch Armand Medium Thin, both of which I have many hours with and are quite “played in”, with neither striking me as particularly loud if played with a modicum of finesse, but both able to get in your face if you play like a YouTube star. (Ever notice how they all seem to bang a gong at the same volume and force?)


The Kerope, being lighter, was faster to react but reacted in a more genteel swelling arch towards the crash sound. It quickly builds but doesn’t quite explode with the same intensity as the other two. The note is beef bouillon, smooth but with salt, comforting and not too hot. It’s also very good for quick lighter accents due to that ability to react. Hit straight on it responds, gives a little tenor holler, takes a bow, and leaves the stage for a snifter of cognac.

I see this cymbal as artificially aged, an attempt to make something new that appears old. I am sure for you purists this is akin to getting a relic’d guitar, a bit of fakery on the part of Zildjian, and a blatant play at our pocketbooks via nostalgia and romance of some smoky Parisian jazz club that can only exist on the Holodeck.

But it’s really a good crash, and sits in its niche quite well. I really think cymbals change after being played a while and, as far as being a “quiet” crash, this one will only get better.
