More drama on the subject with Carmine

Pretty in depth explanation on the first video on the exact Crue setup

“The lights, pyro, click, tones, tracks everything is in sync cause the Digital Performer software is running the show”

So sounds like Carmine was either lying or just wrong. I don’t think what they had on their tracks was unreasonable. Unnecessary? Probably. But he made it sound like everything is on DP and it’s not. Not even close.

It's somewhat irrelevant because many, many top bands are using click tracks and often some extra sounds from a sample pad or computer system. Most bands have double set ups for redundancy. It never happens that you have to stop the show because you just switch to the second system in seconds. It would never happen that you would cancel shows because you lost your laptop - because you have a second system always ready to go.

Obviously Buddy never lived in the modern age of backing tracks and “programmed” shows; but this basically sums up his position on playing exactly how it was verses seeing a unique show at every performance.

“According to Rich, the attempt to bring back the old bands is self-defeating.

"You can't fool the public," he said. "You can't go on saying, 'This is the original Glenn Miller Band,' or 'This is the original Tommy Dorsey Band!' You just can't continue putting people on like that.

"It was contrived and mechanical and had no more feeling to it than if you were hypnotized. You knew every night the arrangements were going to sound the same, the tempos would be the same, even the solos were the same.

There was no emotional involvement!"

And yet I have emotional involvement in plenty of music done with machines, at least in part ;). It ain’t the tool, it’s the user.

I still don’t like using clicks if I don’t have to.
