My band, The Spearmint Sea, played a gig Tuesday night opening for FL's Cathedral Bells. Sparse crowd...

As we were getting off the stage a woman told me her drumming 'made me feel at home'....and even she couldn't explain what that meant...

I'm hoping it meant I played solidly in a manner she was familiar with (like grandma's cooking)...with no jarring transitions or awkward fills. In this band (like most) I'm focusing on the groove and supporting the band.

I play in a Lutheran church, lot's of older folks. One Sunday after service one of the older ladies said "I enjoyed your drumming today". She was escorting a MUCH older lady out who said "yes, that wasn't too bad". I took that as a high complement! :)

My first real gig, at 15-1/2 years old, was at a Shakey's in Pico Rivera, Ca! My parent's had to drive me! I played with an excellent piano player and a banjo player! I didn't get a check, but I received a large portion of the tips jar and all the free pizza I could eat! There would always be a song where I had the opportunity to take a small drum solo. After one of these solos, a woman came up to me and said that I played like I must be on drugs!! I'll never forget the laugh from the piano player!! Good times!!

Our Halloween gig ran long this year. At the end, I went over to the bar to buy a beer. The bartender told me “the bar closed almost an hour ago, didn’t you hear last call; where were you?”

Me -“ I was playing the drums. “

“Oh you were the drummer tonight, let me get you a beer; you sounded great.”

“ Young man , there ain’t many that play like that anymore , I just want to hug you “

Likely a very nice compliment, unless she lives beneath a bowling alley.

That's how people in Florida talk. Of course, being Florida, you have to ask if she meant the sitting on a swing in the backyard "down home" or the Jerry Springer guest "down home" :D but until you get that clarified, I'd take it as a compliment.

I'd say that's a very nice compliment. I think it says a lot about the way you play.
