I looked around for 10.5mm knurled steel rod like Ludwig offer, but they only have 12.5mm. However, I tried looking it up on amazon and found 4"x 10.5mm steel rod, which is perfect. Although it's not knurled, it should hold solidly in a boom arm clamp, shouldn't it? Yamaha's booms are not knurled and they hold fine.
Any drawback to using steel rod that I'm overlooking?
I can join it to the short boom with a memory lock and voila, I have a boom arm of the perfect length.
