Just curious - given the interesting sizes of marching bass drums (all sorts) has anyone ever put together a kit using a marching bass drum as the kick? Photos welcome.

I want to say the Kentucky Headhunters back in the day used two marching bass drums.

I actually went the other way: In 1966 my father brought home a ca. 1940 WFL Zephyr kit with a 14x26 BD, 7x14 snare and 16x16 FT (no rack tom). I used it as an auxiliary kit for a few years and eventually donated it to a community marching band I had been a member of. They refinished everything, used the bass drum as-is, sawed the floor tom in half and combined the halves with the snare drum (sans snares) to create a tymp-tom trio.
At one point I wanted to Frankenstein a kit together with a marching band bass drum, a metal piccolo snare, a 10” roto-tom, and a 16” North floor tom. But then, sadly, I came to my senses and spent the money on a nice vacation.

10x28 WFL does things even a 14x28 can't. The giant head / shallow shell combo just wallops.
It’s probably also much more articulate than the 14” depth, I would think.
No but I have definitely thought about it! I have seen Yamaha 14 x 18 basses for $100 and that's a no-brainer!
I picked up a 14x18 Yamaha marcher from a pawn shop for $40 then drilled it for spurs. I’ve been happily using it on a practice kit for a few years. It’s punchy as hell and sounds great.

Agreed. I had a 70s era 10x28 Ludwig 3-ply, and it sounded fantastic. Sold it years ago (no idea why). I keep an eye out here and there, hoping to pick up another.
it's fun to drive.

Makes sense. You´d never get that band name to fit on a smaller drum.
The Big Ugly: old Leedy & Ludwig 10x28 - the wrap probably started life as gold sparkle but it was orange and cracked when I found it. Using piccolo toms/timbales makes it easier to play. Rescued the bass drum from the basement of an old church around 1976. One head was missing, so that side of the drum was way out of round when I got it. I replaced the original with the one you see in the pix and it's been on this drum ever since. I'm worried that if I take this one off, that side of the drum will also go out of round and I'll never get another head on it.

OH YES, early 60's in high school. I used an old Speed King I acquired from a friend's brother; he was a pro in Las Vegas. Don't remember the size of the bass, but it got bigger during parades, it was a Ludwig Bass Drum with REMO heads.

Find a concert bass drum, this way there will be no mounts for a marching harness
