My first quality kit was a set of 80s metallic white Tama Swingstars. I was just 16 and heavily influenced by The Police. I recall Copeland played an Imperialstar kit of the same finish in the "Wrapped Around Your Finger" video. That's mainly why I bought that kit.

Two years later, I upgraded to a used set of 80s piano white Superstars! The clerk said they would look great onstage as the lights reflected off of them. He was right!

As to black kits? To me, they disappear on stage, same with wine red, dark blue, natural walnut, etc. I don't dislike them, I just don't prefer them. I did, however, like the look of that all-black Remo Bozzio kit with the Black Paistes!

Ever since I got the white Superstars, I've just always preferred white, silver sparkle, or mirror chrome for kit colors. To me, they stand out more. And second to the quality of the kit, the color is important, too, especially onstage. Otherwise, why finish drums in the first place?

I'm a huge fan of the color black in general because it's neutral, versatile, and classy.

I have committed to owning only one nice kit. For the past few years it's been a George Way Tuxedo kit in black lacquer. Recently I acquired a 60s Ludwig Club Date in Black Galaxy and, after lots of debate, chose to keep it instead and sell the George Way (sold last week).

I agree that black can either look classy or cheap depending on the finish. I think the sparkle in the Black Galaxy will make it look a bit more unique while still maintaining the classy, subdued look that black brings.

One the most elegant kits I've ever owned was a Black Panther/Black Widow. It was transparent black where you could see through it to the maple wood grain if you were up close. Brushed nickel hardware. Kind of wish I would have kept it as it sounded really nice too. Bass drum was too deep (22x18") and floor toms were too shallow at 14x12 and 16x14" respectively.

Black might not always been "in style" but it never really goes out of style either.

I love the Sonor Protean snare - the satin black finish is elegant and understated and works well with most drum kit finishes . It is a fabulous sounding snare . Gavin really designed a great snare drum . This was based on an older Yamaha Recording Custom (round bearing edge ) that he has owned for years .

I've somehow only ever owned and liked the look of black kits, with the exception of various different coloured snares, but am currently looking for one in white.

I've only owned one kit, and it's in the ultra rare Black Cortex finish.
When I get the forever house with dedicated practice space I'll buy a 'final' kit, most likely in either natural or birdseye maple... But I do like the dyed finishes like Ludwig's charcoal shadow.
