Here’s my hybrids at a gig last week.
These are seriously clean, high end maple build and sound.

Yamaha also makes BY FAR the best looking walnut finish - that is a fabulous looking kit my friend. And your picture of the audience is PERFECT for exactly what I am trying to get at as well. Audience size of about that - playing with a brass and woodwind section and possibly an electrified bass guitar, etc. - you can carry a venue of that size easily unamplified. It appears to me that a lot of the manufacturers are starting to thicken the shells (just slightly) and shorten the tom depths back to more traditional depths - more the clear and resonant sounds of the past - that can be heard clearly.

Plus the fundamental will probably be a little higher, SCM has F.A.S.T. - Yamaha will have traditional depth toms. One deep resonant kit for rock and another clear, punchy kit for jazz / funk.

Look at it this way - it has been my main passion in life and I don't spend money on really anything else - but I am going to have nice professional quality gear for recording and performance.

Amen to that brother.

Jmele2 - EXCELLENT studio recording clip of the AHM. You just sold that kit and you don't even work for Yamaha (or do you?)!

You have captured the sound of the 12" and floor toms better than other videos I have heard and the whole kit sounds stunning. Sounds full and resonant like my Starclassic Maple but with a little more body and clarity of sound.

I realize as I am getting older (not because my hearing is shot - always protected that over 35 years of playing) I am more drawn to drums that speak very clearly. The SCM has that deep, forever resonance and sustain, but the Yamaha seems to speak a little more clearly with a bit more projection.

Clearly I need both!
Hey there - I am a Yamaha artist. I've been with them since 1996 and love the drums. Nothing else comes close for me drumset-wise. Snare drums and cymbals - that's another story, lol.

I do love the way these toms tune. Very easy and the floor toms and bass drum have a lot of meat in their sound.

Check it out.. first half of vid is not processed

The first half of the video definitely has a ton of compression on the sound. Could be Youtube, but definitely not "un-processed"

I don't think it will be a gigantic difference from what I have heard.. but that is a testament to both kits.. .. The Yamaha you will only gain one mm in thickness on both toms AND kick.., so it is not a huge jump but the inner ply I think does definitely have some effect.

If you can get a deal on the Yamaha, which I have seen frequently.. then I would do it just to do it... I am a fan of switching out kits.. trying different things.
Excellent advice. Did just that tonight, custom ordered a new AHM in Classic Walnut. 22x16, 8x7, 10x7, 12x8, 16x15. Based upon what I have heard online, reviews I have read was enough for me to take the plunge.

Most likely will sell the SCM kit and replace it with the new Starclassic Walnut / Birch for a more 'exotic' sound when needed.

I realize it's going to be Christmas before they're delivered, BUT WHAT A CHRISTMAS PRESENT IT WILL BE!!

Re-headed the Starclassic Maple with emperors over ambassadors and tuned up, instantly vetoed the idea of selling the TAMA. As a matter of fact I may be adding a 18 x 16 second floor tom soon...;-)

Two drum sets and 6 snare drums isn't too bad of a problem, right?!?!

My happy little AHM kit - 13x9,16x15, 24x14 in the practice room. Excellent build quality. The bass drum is a low end cannon.

Anyone play a Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple drum set? I am just wondering what your thoughts are on the drums? Do you also play other Yamaha kits? If so, how do they compare? How is the bass drum? Thank you, in advance.
