I usually have two. My fancy stave kit, and a gigging kit of some kind. The stave kit only goes to nice gigs, never crappy clubs or Moose Lodges.

I think it depends on what you're playing situation.
If you're in two bands at two different rehearsal places and you have to supply a rehearsal kit then I'd say 3 (one for each place and one to gig...)...maybe one to practice at home so 4....

I'm hoping to have 2 kits set up at home...maybe 3 (one with silent stroke heads/cymbals)...

of course the other answer is ....one more!

Three is my preference - preferably different sized sets too . I was up to 7 kits at one time and 4 of them were the same configuration.

I play in a couple bands that have requirements for different set configurations which is what I base my set inventory on.

The most that I owned at one time was nine kits, I was literally tripping over drum cases.

Currently I (sort of) have four.

1960s Slingerland Gene Krupa Model 1N 13", 16" FT, 20" BD Champagne

1975 Slingerland 12", 13", 16" FT, 18" FT, 22" BD Blakrome

2008 DW Collector's Series 8", 10", 12", 13", 14" FT, 16" FT, 22" BD Broken Glass (Silver Glass)

2019/2020 Gretsch USA Custom 10", 12", 13", 14" FT, 16" FT, 18" FT, 18" BD, 20" BD, 22" BD, 24" BD Silver Glass

And forty (the last time that I counted) snare drums.

I'm likely not the best person to ask... (But I did downsize.)

The champagne Slingerlands are set up in my basement for my daily practice. The blakrome Slingerlands are setup at my bassist's house where we rehearse once a week. The DW kit and the Gretsch shell bank are cased up and ready to go to gigs. (Someday.)

has B Carlos weighed in? I think he used to have a 2nd home used for drum storage. Then he had a barn sized facility built...didn't he?
