I've seen hex nuts used on one house kit, snugged up to the bottom of the lug. I don't know how effective it was to prevent backing out, the kit had a note on them about not tuning the drums so, maybe it was more about that.
I would also say counter nuts are the easiest solution.
If you tune very low, fewer t rods might hold tuning better.
Personally, I‘d tune a bit higher.
I have a 20 drum with 10 lugs , probably would be a bit easier to achieve the pitch I want with 8 lugs. Can the counter lugs be tightened by hand or would I need to carry a tool around ?
