In honor of "The Professor's" 40 year tenure as both drummer and lyricist for Rush...

What is your favorite quote from Neil's word contribution to Rush's success over these past 40 (now 41) years?

Spirit of the Radio was the first Rush song to catch my attention, then Moving Pictures came out and I was hooked on the music. Next, I read the lyrics of all the songs on Moving Pictures and was blown away by the depth of thought, feeling, and meaning. I did the same thing with Permanent Waves and realized that Neil is a very unique and intriguing person. I believe the first of many lyrics that have influenced me is:

"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice." from Free Will

Such a simple truth that remains very profound to this day

Your turn!!!!

"My mind is not for rent to any God or Government" wasn't half bad. I'm in full compliance with the rhetoric of that message.

Two of my favourites -

"Each of us a world apart, Alone and yet together like two passing ships"

and,

"All of us get lost in the darkness
Dreamers learn to steer by the stars
All of us do time in the gutter
Dreamers turn to look at the cars"

pretty much the entire song Witch Hunt

"The night is black without a moon
The air is thick and still
The vigilantes gather on
The lonely, torchlit hill

Features distorted, in the flickering light
Faces are twisted and grotesque
Silent and stern in the sweltering night
Mob moves like demons possessed

Quiet in conscience, calm in their right
Confident their ways are best

The righteous rise with burning eyes
Of hatred and ill-will
Madmen fed on fear and lies
To beat and burn and kill

They say there are strangers who threaten us
Our immigrants and infidels
They say there is strangeness too dangerous
In our theaters and bookstore shelves

Those who know what's best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves

Quick to judge, quick to anger
Slow to understand

Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand"

If I had to pick a favorite though it would be:

"Quick to judge, quick to anger
Slow to understand

Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand"

You'd probably like "Roll the Bones" :

Faith is cold as ice –
Why are little ones born only to suffer
For the want of immunity
Or a bowl of rice?
Well, who would hold a price
On the heads of the innocent children
If theres some immortal power
To control the dice?

Two of my favorite Peart quotes ...

I remember all of us riding in the truck down to Long & McQuade [a music store in Toronto]. What a young musician’s dream, to say, “Look at those chrome drums. Look at that 22-inch ride cymbal. I’ll have those.” It was one of those unparalleled exciting days of your life.

With people, you constantly think, “If I’m nice to people and treat them well, they’ll appreciate it and behave better.” They won’t, but it’s still not a bad way to live.

" the more things change, the more they stay the same" off of Circumctances.

One of the biggest reasons I became a RUSH fan over 30 years ago was because Neil's lyrics could be chewed on a bit, unlike most bands that sang of sex, drugs, and rock & roll all the time.

Wow ... I'm digging into my Rush archives ...

The Way The Wind Blows is intense -

Now it's comes to this
Wide-eyed armies of the faithful
From the Middle East to the Middle West

Pray, and pass the ammunition
So many people think that way
You gotta watch what you say

To them and them, and others too
Who don't seem to see the things the way you do
Now it's come to this

Hollow speeches of mass deception
From the Middle East to the Middle West
Like crusaders in unholy alliance
Now it's come to this

Like we're back in the Dark Ages
From the Middle East to the Middle West
It's a plague that resists all science

'No reward for resistance
No assistance, no applause' (Lock and Key)

And...

'You won't get wise with the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dream might be' (Something for Nothing)

And..

'The future disappears into memory
With only a moment between
Forever dwells in that moment
Hope is what remains to be seen' (The Garden)

My favorite PPL (Pre-Peart Lyric) From Working Man "I get home at five o'clock and I take myself out a nice cold beer" LOL no wonder they hired him, if they'd continued that path they'd be on Country radio today...just add something about a truck :)

Favorite Peart lyric, so many to choose from as I really am a fan, though I don't listen much anymore, the topic puts me in the mood (pun intented)
Here's a link to:

I'll go with this one:
From Second Nature:

"Folks are basically decent, conventional wisdom would say, but we read about the exceptions in the papers every day"

Had a coach say one time that he never read the front page of the paper because it was all about the losers, the winners he said were all in the sports pages.

Half the world hates
What half the world does every day
Half the world waits
While half gets on with it anyway

We're only immortal for a limited time.

Your soul is stained with the blood of the innocent, feel their pain.

And
Attention all planets of the solar federation
And, how about the whole song of a passage to bangcock
