DRUM Magazine recently published the "60 Best Drummers of All Time."

The list is a bit of a puzzle. Do Danny Carey and the guy who played on a "Smokin' in the Boys Room" do the same work?

Where's Rikki Rocket?

Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Pink's backing band and the American Idol house band: They're all one thing, right?

The criteria aren't spelled out, but one element is apparently being over 55 years old and from one of the three English-speaking countries that isn't Canada.

Replacement drummers for nostalgia acts are as valued as much as the drummers who came up with the parts for hit recordings like "Mr. Roboto" or "Suite Madame Blue."

As an example, Shannon Forrest's inclusion is supported mainly by the slightly-above-200 shows he played as Toto's fourth drummer (2015-2019) before Simon Phillips took over this year playing "Hold the Line" and the band's other two hits.

Honestly, the cynical part of me thinks the Drum staff put some guys on the list to score future interviews: "Yeah Chief, he's been kicked out of very popular bands. Not so much the one bankrolled by the Australian billionaire guitarist, but still."

Before I get to the magazine's list -- and note that the authors didn't have the courage to rank numerically -- let's just imagine Ringo Starr and Mark Schulman congratulating one another on making up 3.33% of the Top 60 Club.

Because the 60 Best Rock Drummers of All Time need no introduction, I won't list the bands they're associated with:

John Bonham
Keith Moon
Neil Peart
Jeff Porcaro
Tommy Aldridge

Whether or not you like Bon Jovi, Tico is the guy that played on their best stuff. Matt Sorum and Mickey Dee, not so much

I guess a year and a half of isolation did nothing to stimulate these "writers" creativity. Another mind-numbingly pointless list. In fact, post covid seems to be showing an increase in lazy "journalism". Seriously, have our attention spans sunk to a level where people have completely given up on content and substance of any sort?

No disrespect to Tico but, Mickey and Matt play circles around him.

It’s like they just wrote down the 60 they thought of off the top of their head …
