The ratchets in the adjusting mechanism puts it right where I don’t want it. It’s super frustrating. I do appreciate how light it is.
Do you have the 6300 or 6300UL? My 6300UL does not have a stepped adjustment like my 6300. It looks like this:

I almost sprung for one of those light Tama stands because it doesn’t choke the tom like others do, but I decided just to go with the ultra cheap beginner stand I got 20 years ago. Holds it in place just fine, doesn’t choke the tom, and I already have it. I only wish I could remember who made it.

I do not have the UL model. Never even knew this existed. Another one for me to check out.
I used the UL and cant imagine a position where it wouldn't work well. Plus its stupid light. Gearless tilter, so if you're used to having a tom in a stand, this is probably the one for you.

I’ve got a really old (60s?) Pearl flat base stand that works a treat. Nice and light, really compact when folded up.

Has a touch of wobble when the drums pushed sideways, but I don’t notice it at all when playing, even when I’ve got it jacked up high enough to put the 13” above the 26”.

I glued a piece of foam on each of the rubber basket claws, kind of a DIY ‘true tone’/‘booty shaker’ thing, and there’s no notable difference in tone, resonance or sustain when compared to holding the drum by a hoop or lug.

If I was buying a new one I’d look at the Pearl 150 (I think) flat based snare stand. I’ve got a couple of the same line cymbal stands and they’re great. They were priced similar to the Tama Classic and significantly cheaper (and a bit lighter) than the Ludwig Flat base stands. You’ve got the option of flipping the base from flat to a traditional single brace style too, which can be handy if you need the stand to ‘step over’ anything.

Hey I just started mounting my 8x12 rack tom on a snare stand and wanted to tell you guys about the old Rogers memrilock snare stands from the 70s because they may be a good solution. I tried mounting my tom on my Pearl stand with the floating rubber arms and the tom did not sustain/resonate as well as it did with the Rogers. It’s metal on metal contact with the hoop so I was a bit weary but there’s no problem. It made a little bit of rattling but when you tighten this wingnut it secures everything. You guys might wanna look into this stand.

Score an ‘80’s-era Premier Trilok and don’t look back. I buy every one I come upon.
(I hate ‘em as snare stands, LOVE ‘em as tom stands.)
Look! There’s a couple now!

Well its definitely not lightweight, but I wanted my rack tom to float more over the bass drum than most any standard stare stand would put it, so I went with a DW9300 because the snare basket is on a knurled arm that allows you to postion the tom more over the bass drum, almost like a boom stand. Also, being heavy duty the thing will NOT fall over.

I have been using the Tama Classic series tom stand since they came out , and there is really no issues to report whatsoever . No choking , lightweight , easy to position . Just a no brainer folks . It also doesn’t cost an arm and a leg .

Hands down, my vintage Buck Rogers Walberg & Auge snare stands are the best. Not only are they the coolest looking snare stands ever made, but they're built like a tank (but not overly heavy) and even at over 50 years old, they function perfectly. I used the DW Ultralights for a while, but went back to my tried and true Buck Rogers snare stands.

I've got an excellent snare stand perfectly positioning my 9X13; having that success, I don't give a flit how much it weighs.
What's all the rave about lighter weight ?
Many of us older guys with lots of gigs who have to lug their own gear appreciate having a hardware case we can lift into the car without getting another hernia.

25 years ago I didn't care about weight. Now I most certainly do.

Now that I switched to lighter weight hardware, I can fit everything into a Dewalt tool box, and it doesn't kill my already wrecked back.

OOh, I'm going to check out that case. I have a Rubbermaid thing I've been using for years. My friends joke about the #tupperwaretrapcaseonwheels I've had it so long; they see it in photos and tag it! The only thing I don't like about it is it's not flat on top; it's not great in the car for stacking stuff on TOP of it.

I use one of these too. Somehow I ended up with a concert height one (missing the memory lock, unfortunately) and it works great.

Me too. I have the concert height too. I hated it for a while to use as a snare stand but works great as a tom stand

I still have no idea what is wrong with rack toms hanging off a bass drum post.

Perfect tom positioning every time. Far, far easier to set up. Less to carry. And a lot less stand clutter at ground level. What’s not to like? Let’s face it most, if not all of the great drumming concerts and recordings have been made with toms mounted on bass drums. (Plus they look way better too)
