1. I need a kit for every possible situation. In return I have 5 kits with bass drums ranging from 16”-22”, one time it was up to 24”.

2. I need a kit with every possible sound. I have 3 maple, 1 titanium, and 1 acrylic.

3. I need to have one set of every Paiste line because they all have different applications.

4. Snare drums.. too much sonic justification, but lately it’s buying drums from people I know personally.

I blame forums. ;)

I remember reading threads about how a particular snare drum sounded relative to another snare drum and thought, that doesn't make a lot of sense. So I'd buy two of the drums in question to hear the difference for myself. After a while I started buying snare drums to appease my own curiosity. I eventually ended up with thirty four snare drums. I did a major sell off and eventually had a manageable nine or so snares. Recently I came to the realization that the number of snare drums that I own has crept past twenty five again. Hmm. I'm not entirely sure how this happened this time.
There’s one guy on the Pearl forum that has over 100 snare drums and they are almost all Pearl.

See below. :)

My wife completely forgot my birthday, just a few weeks ago.
I still didn't bring it up to her.
But, I think that's justification enough to buy myself some birthday presents.

I got a new job, start on Monday.

So I bought over 4k worth of mics and recording gear to make drum tracks that only a handful of people will ever hear or care about.

Sweetwater has 48 months no interest right now if anyone else wants to go nuts.

Not to poke fun at someone else’s thread (or buying habits because, seriously, who am I to judge?), but I just saw the one about buying a drum made on someone’s date of birth. My very first thought was, “Yeah, that seems like a pretty flimsy justification to spend money,” and then I immediately realized... I’ve done way worse, including:

-Buying a new kit in a purple diamond pearl wrap to commemorate the birth of my daughter (as I explained to my wife, “honey, in 8 or 10 years, what if she wants to learn to play drums? She needs her own kit, and she won’t want to play any of mine — they’re not pretty like these drums are!”)

-Buying a new kit from a country I’m going to visit this summer as an early souvenir

-Buying a snare drum from a country I visited 10 years ago... as a late souvenir

So, what are your best terrible excuses for buying more crap? (You know, just in case I need ideas for my next purchase...)

I suspect I may be the guy mentioned above who bought the 68 acrolite having the same birth month/day as said drum. ;) If so, and in my defense, allow me to clear the record and admit to the jury that I was going to buy it anyway because...hey I'm getting a 68 acro for $100 bucks! The date thing was just the icing on the cake.

That said, my best (and terribly unreliable) excuse for buying more gear usually is, "well, I just sell (insert item here)". Of course, I rarely do.

And no offense taken...good thread!

I have two Acros and a Supra but not a Standard. (for real I just sold one of the Acros and the Standard was listed today)
My band is playing When the Whip Comes Down and I don't have a China Cymbal.
Maybe this next cymbal will be the holy grail of all ride cymbals.
Maybe this next cymbal will be the holy grail of all crash cymbals.

Nope, I'm most likely the guy he's referring to. Hey, I resemble that remark!!!!!!
I like old Ludwigs, so it made natural SENSE to want to own a Ludwig (or related) drum with my birthdate stamped inside. And PHOOEY on the idea of buying a stamp and doing it myself. I want the real thing. I'm also experienced enough to know where to get the proper information to make sure I don't knowingly buy a counterfeit.
Heck, I might just settle for any one stamped April 1955, regardless of the day.

I was born on a Sunday in 1959. It would be very unlikely that I'd find anything built on my birthday. (If I were looking.) It is a fun idea though.

You're right stretch. I didn't read your post until after I had replied. I made a similar comment a few days ago. Anyway, good luck on your quest!

I don't find excuses. If I like it and can afford it at the time, I buy it and my wife is OK with that. I don't really spend major money on anything else (for myself). If I spent money on other hobbies then I'm sure she wouldn't be thrilled but I'm sure nobody who is rational would be thrilled with that anyways.

A lot of the kits I purchased were from Craigs List ranging from 10 to 150 miles away. In the summer when my wife was off (teacher) an I found one that was a bit of a trip I would make it a fun event by buying her dinner somewhere, stop for ice cream or whatever, a road trip! But almost always I would use the excuse that the drums are so cheep I have to buy them. And usually that was the case.

My wife is an enabler. She made my last cymbal purchase for me when I asked her to pick up a 19" K Hybrid China at my favorite used gear shop. The store guys love her. She knits scarfs and socks for those guys on request. They treat me right. I have spent quick of few dollar there on guitars, amps, basses, cymbals, drum gear etc.
