Back in the 80s I went to a PASIC show in Ann Arbor Michigan. I walk into the display area and the Remo booth is right by the front door. Billy was sitting on a tiny throne playing a remote Junior Pro set, which was new that year. I really regret leaving my camera in the car that day
I found out about him when a friend bought the first Mahavishnu Orchestra album. Blew me away. Just before that album was released I was introduced to J. mcLaughlin’s two previous albums, one with Buddy Miles on drums, the other with Tony Oxley. They were terrific, but Cobham was a step above both. Happy Birthday, Billy!
Billy is certainly the most powerful drummer I’ve ever seen and is the only drummer I’ve ever seen play using two sticks in each hand - at Toronto clinic in 2006.
Myself and another drummer met him after a show in Guelph Ontario in 1975,
while we were in awe, blown away by his playing, he was gracious and I remember his advice,
“you must get out and play for people”.
