So. I think I am in the ballpark here. In the same universe. Deep in the forest.

I might just have to keep this sucker and actually put 8 rivets in it. Or 6 or even just 4

I just need to burry this 22" crash and get it all dirt and grimy and fingerprints and crap.

So. Do you think I have a Billy vibe going here?

I know the Sidewinder is early Billy ....but he loved rivets even back then and that ride he has sounds on the bright, brittle side.

Something in the ballpark of this.

Anyone want to guess stamp and weight of this old K.

It is nice and trashy and dry. It doesn't sound too light.

BAMN

Just bought one. $275 shipped Hope it sounds like this one.

Bamn.

Between these and my Ludwig Coliseum.....(which is what I played on video above) and My Round Badge Gretsch kit

I think I am in Billy Higgins heaven.

A 602 22 Thin Crash'd get her done. This feels very close but a little... brash.

Brash?

Wow. Seems warm and darkish

Very close might be close enough for me.

I dont know. Only had it a few days

I owned a vintage 22 602 and it was brighter than the 2002...yeah it weighed 200 more grams ..but wasnt tons heavier...it was very chimey..

Ill probably just end up with mt scdr anyway

Now I see what you mean
The 602 is drier, more subtle complex

Yup. I hear it in the stick sound too

The 2002 is a great sound too, but for that Sweet Basil paperthin the above is a fair bit closer. I think Paiste will release a 22 Paper Thin soon

Wow.
Ok so I guess beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.
I like it! Maybe it’s just words; it‘s not dark as such, but with a 2002 I didn‘t expect that kind of deep low-mid tones undercurrent.

What I don‘t understand is the “now I need...“ part. Why are you going for a completely different setup again? If you like an 18“ crash on the left, who cares what Billy used in that spot? It seems like you keep in trying on various costumes (setups) of your heroes rather than combining various pieces to arrive at your wardrobe, your own personal style.
If you like both the SCDR and a rivetted washy sound for example, you could use the SCDR and put the rivetted cymbal underneath to the far right. More like a Danny Gottlieb with Metheny kind of concept, and he was heavily influenced by the small setups of Mel/Morello at the start.

I am almost 100% certain the Sweet Basil is the medium ride Ed Blackwell gave him

I know had a lot of cymbals and you can hear a paperthin/thinner cymbal for sure on the Cedar Walton/David Williams recordings.

If you compare Sweet Basil with those you can hear a difference.

Also on Billy's Recording..self titled Billy Higgins...a heavier ride for sure

All that being said..i do hear in the 602 what you are talking about

But do I really NEED a 602?

If I gigged tonight with that 2002 and my little AJ6 sticks with worn diwn tips...i dont think bass, piano and horn would come up after the first set and say

"Tom,close but no cigar"

They would say
"Nice 1st set"

They would say nothing about the cymbal. If I asked (brought attention to it) the bass player (also a drummer) would say "yeah. Its got a Higgins vibe...nice"

I guess it comes down to me.
