Cast vs thick rolled snares

I have 2 sets of Kevin's wires. They're the aircraft (6039) version and sound great. Very well made.

I had a set of his aircraft wires also, and passed them along to another forum member to try on their replica. Top quality.

He now found a source for coiled snappy’s, so is making the snappy replicas also. I need some myself.

Awesome man! yeah I have probably have a 3month wait as well. I did supply the hardware. I lucked out and found a near mint 84 Imperialstar. I can't wait!!!

Man both of those drums are clean! I have two as well! I may have Savage make me another one down the road. Im going with the Bigger Mighty lugs for my first one... it was a hard decision lol.

I ordered 2 sets of the 6039 replicas from Kevin as well. TBH, wasn't a huge fan of the sound, but I'm willing to give them another shot.

Let me know how the snappys sound! Are they supposed to match the original 6035 wires?

I absolutely LOVE the sound this type of snare puts out. Loud, fat, gut punch, and not particularly ringy.

Curious if any of you that have the Paiste, N&C, Tama, Sonor, Oriollo, treebronze, Duluth cast shells have compared them to thicker walled shells of similar material that aren’t cast.

I have a Tama bell brass, Oriollo in a few floating chassis that are both cast, the Oriollo I believe is 3.4mm. The Tama is probably the punchiest and most “solid” sounding. The Oriollo is fat, a bit more tone, just as loud.

Next is a 220 bronze shell built from an Allstar Drumworks shell and lugs (which is actually BRASS-just to add to all the confusing bell brass/bell bronze confusion) that is 3mm and a welded shell. In a blindfold test, I’d have a hard time telling it apart from the other two above. Playing it, it has a slightly shorter overall note, but still very loud and fat. (I have a replacement black hoop on the way, original is chipped badly)

Just picked up a trick copper 3mm shell. It’s a touch darker in sound than the others, but same character.

All are within a pound of each other, about 18 lbs, the Oriollo maybe a half pound heavier.

I also have a Duluth Alu-bronze coming in January to throw into the mix with matching bronze hoops.

I’m starting to think with similar shell materials (all of these copper based), it’s the thickness of the shell that is contributing to their overall characteristics, regardless of whether cast or welded. At least maybe 90% similar.

What do you think?

35+ year player here, totally agree. I have held both cast and rolled types over my arm minus hoops and heads and struck with a cymbal mallet I hear zero difference. I also hear zero difference in recordings. If the shell is made properly I do not believe the human ear can differentiate. My .02 cents.

I have a DW 6X14 Collectors Series Cast Bronze that I believe is somewhat rare. It has a huge sound. I have not experimented with tuning.

He kept a wood hooped model, but im partial to triple flanged and die cast anyway.

It looks he kept it in prisitine condition, as I always try to do with my gear too.

Here's my newest amazing Cade build Savage Drums: 8x14 5mm Cast Bronze with Bronze Hoops, Tama Linear Drive Strainer and Butt (my favorite) w/Ocheltree solid bronze lugs. Amazing drum. Nearly 40lbs.
I told Cade that this drum sounds and plays better than any drum I have ever owned. It's a masterpiece. If I could only have one, this would be the one!

What is the story on those hoops? They look similar to the Duluth version, but underside seems to be routed more… Can you make any comparisons?

Cade has not been using Duluth shells or hoops in several years. He isn't disclosing where he gets them from these days, but they are amazing. I haven't taken the hoops off the drum to be able to tell you the different in weight between these and the Duluth versions. Sonically, they sound the same and they feel the same as the original Tama Bell Brass channel hoops.
