I recently heard that those two kits are in fact the same. Does anyone know if this is true? I do know that the natural kit was wrapped at one time but I had never even thought of it being his black nitrons.

Don't be;live they were the same set. The "Get Yer Yayas Out" set was a 3ply 1950s 22/13/16. The Natural maple set is a 60s, 6ply 22/12/16

Charlie's Natural maple set is not naturally a maple. It was revealed to me by Orangemi and Kona in pics that Charlies maple kit was formerly wrapped, and now it is not, exposing the outer ply as not being one piece...so it was wrapped. Charlie says that his maple kit is a 57 or 58 on the Youtubes. After I found that out, you can easily see the separate plies, about half way up the floor tom.

I'm pretty sure the Natural Maple kit is a 57.........at least that's what is written in Geoff Nicholls' The Drum Book pp 40-41.
Man I love that kit......Rogers Swivomatic Hihat and Lidwig SpeedKing pedal....sweet. He does choose different brand snares with that kit. In Geoff's book it's pictured with an 8x14 Pearl....and I think I've seen him with a DW or maybe Camco(?)share in other photos with the kit.

On the warp issue. It would be interesting to find out if it was wrapped at one time. The floor tom has what looks like segmented (2) outer plys. I have a 47 Gretsch tom that was previously wrapped and this is what it looked like with the wrap removed.

I don't think they're the same. The live kit in 69 was BDP, the kit in the Electric Circus movie is black nitron. I think the current kit is different, but Charlie would know.

I just checked out a black Gretsch 20,12,14 at Maxwell's on monday. I think I like this color so much because of Charlie and Mitch Mitchell. My first real drums were black though, so that has something to do with it too.

Currently loving my beater kit.. maybe it'll end up black too!

It may be his kit - I've heard he does use different snare drums.

These photos I copied out of Geoff Nicholl's book. I don't have a large scanner so the photos are cropped.
I have the very same stick bag - I got it as a gift for Christmas 1975 and I use it all the time.

I love this photo with the Rogers hi-hat, Speed King and the leather stick bag etc.
BTW- I don't really think it is Charlie's kit.

I wonder if that is the thin crash that Zildjian gave him. Possibly A. CIE?

Thanks for the links

Here too:

It took 7 years but I finally got the info I was looking for.

Charlie has used the following kits w/ The Stones
Dates are with The Stones NOT the years of the drums.

1964-69 - Ludwig 22/13/16 in Sky Blue Pearl
1969-71 - Gretsch 22/13/16 RB in Black Nitron
1971-78 - Gretsch 22/13/16 SSB in Black Nitron
1978-present - Gretsch 22/12/16 RB in natural maple (original wrap stripped before he owned them)

The current kit was a rental kit from SIR studios that he fell in love with and was able to purchase them.

I've studied that kit a lot and yes, it was a rental kit and now his main touring one (the only one I've seen in 1989, 1994, 1997, and 2002). I was not aware that blonde kit (which CW has said was about 1957 or so) was previously wrapped. I have read here that orig. natural factory finishes that early are either super rare or non existent so I always suspected that was the case, though.

I have a SSB 13/16/22 I am refinishing as a CW tribute. I ended up getting a 12" RB too to make it "right"....unfortunately it's still pending completion!

Where does the BDP Gretsch set fall in this timeline? It's a 60's RB and I have seen pics. Johnny D should be able to set the record straight on all things Charlie and Gretsch.

I also read several times of different sources his natural kit is a '57 - a studio rental kit he used in early 70's for a Ronnie Wood solo album (uncredited). He loved it so much he bought it after the sessions.
I predict it will be as revered and iconic as Ringo's black oyster kits....once Charlie stops playing it.

Charlie’s maple finished kit has paper tags inside the shells. According to Richard Gier’s research, and Rob Cook’s Gretsch book, that dates them from 1962 or later.

Do

Interesting, do you have a link to Gier's resarch or pics? because I'm seeing 1957 in this amongst several other sources
You’d have to purchase one of those books to get that info. I don’t think it’s published online anywhere, but if you do a search here for Gretsch paper tags, you’ll probably find a ton of info.

I suspect that somebody mistakenly told Charlie a long time ago that these were 1957 drums, and it just stuck. 1957 is a more romantic year than "sometime after 1962," especially to a bebop-loving Brit.

Charlie has two natural maple kits.....Main stage and B stage sets.
