CLAP STACKS - Istanbul, Meinl, Hearbeat, etc. What is the difference? What is the best?

I
The first one by Istanbul/Trevor Lawrence came out 3 years ago.

It has passed the fad date.

I still want to find a Zildjian model.
I think drumming fads are longer...
Concert toms, power toms, super deep bass drums, piccolo snares, multiple splash cymbals, sea shells on a hi hat, stacks...
They all endure, but the initial rush lasts a few years.
I'm not knocking any of them. I want a clap thing and a stack and some shells too.

to my ear I don't hear much of a difference between the few I've seen on videos and a set of aux hats set for sloshiness...and you get a lot more mileage out of aux hats..more variations...this is one (of the very few) fad I don't get (and won't get).

I have the original Agop. It's (by FAR) the most commented-on piece of equipment that I've ever had. Singers and band members absolutely LOVE it. If you're doing modern stuff that needs that authentic "clap" sound and don't want to bring electronics, it's very useful. It's quiet though, so keep that in mind -- if you have overheads running it should be fine.

Definitely a different sound / vibe than other stacks / aux hats.

You don’t get why some drummers would want a cool clap sound?

I wish I was playing music that required more of this.

Here’s a great example of its singular purpose.

The 20" Versa Stack by Timothy Roberts is by far the best I've heard. I went with his over any of the big name brands. By far the most commented on piece of gear I have

I'm so confused. I looked up clapsticks and they look like claves but from Australia? They don't sound like a clap.

Then this video above shows three stacked cymbals in the intro and I'm guessing those are the ones made by Istanbul? I get these sound like a clap.

My kid is in a local "Pops" classical and they had a concert yesterday and the guy who does percussion had a contraption that look like two pieces of 2x4 that were a foot long each and joined with a hinge contraption. He would open them up in like a V-formation and then slap them together making some sort of clap sound. I have no clue what those were but certainly it was loud and clap like. I'd like to know what those were but I'm guessing those aren't what the OP is talking about.

Clapstacks not clapsticks :)

I got some old p.o.s. cymbals. I wonder how hard it is to make one. I want one of those clap stacks but got no money.

Found this tutorial:

Made one
It's alright. I may tweak it a bit more later. You can totally tell what it's supposed to be. Used a brass MIC 12" that I hammered until it just wanted to taco, and a slightly warped but otherwise unmolested 10" A splash. Maybe not ready for prime time yet but might get there with a couple adjustments or another layer.

The wooden boards make more of a whip crack sound than a hand clap, IMO. Every high school band that plays Sleigh Ride for their Christmas concert uses them for the whip. The Istanbul Clap Stack isn't so much an authentic "hand clap" as it is a dang good analog representation of a digital drum machine hand clap sound. I think they sound awesome, and I could definitely use one. It's just a lot of bread for something I'd use maybe once a month or less. Or maybe I'd use it a lot more if I had one.

Price. You can make your own for very cheap. Go on CL or FB Marketplace, look for beat up, cracked cymbals of all sizes, try stacking them in different configurations. I've done that for about 30 years. I keep all my cracked cymbals for this purpose, works awesome. There's all sorts of things you can do to tweak the sound, from adding tape to mute, to adding a jingle ring, on and on it goes. You certainly don't need to spend much for these alternate sounds. I have a pair of saw blades I bought 30 years ago I still use. My Dad ground off the teeth, they have a very interesting sound, unique to them. Lots of cheap options. If I want a legit "hand clap" sound, I'll trigger it with my Roland BT-1.

I don't know why, but on the internet the only one of these that sounds like a drum machine clap (which was the goal) is the Agop. Shape? Stiffness? Thickness? I dunno.

Yup. That’s been my experience as well. Lots of cool sounding versions out there, but none of them sound like the analog clap sound (to me), they just sound like short / cutting cymbal stacks.

That’s been my impression in person as well as on recordings.

I’ve got the Zildjian set. Sound pretty good to me. I like that the Meinl sets have options for more. And with different series.
