Back in 1979 I went to go see Styx and this band I'd never heard of, April Wine was opening up. Jerry Mercer played his solo and I was floored.

I liked how he started with a theme that came out of the preceding tune and mostly stayed with it.

Covered a couple of their songs back in the day. Great band, some great tunes!

I'm pretty sure that April wine was produced by Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli of The Rascals.

The only song of theirs I've ever heard is their version of Lennon/McCartney's "Tell Me Why", and it's great!

Back when they were having hits we used to cover a song by them called "All Over Town" which wasn't really a hit but just one we liked off their album. It had an interesting off kilter sort of feel to the beat.

Of course we played "Just Between You and Me" which went over big time at proms.

Couldn't make it to the drum solo. Skipped ahead a few minutes at a time. That stuff is unwatchable and unlistenable.

April Wine as a band or that genre of music in general?

I’ve never been able to get into All Over Town correctly ...

I'm not sure if we ever did either. I think we had it down pretty well.

Usually ends up depressing to go back 40 years and listen to the tapes of what, at the time, seemed like great performances.

Rocky Mountain Way was always tricky to come in right for me.

I was thinking dang , they don’t come across live that well , compared to the records .
Although I did see them about 6 years ago as a 4 piece and was impressed ...

“I Like to Rock” is so great and so dumb at the same time! I love it.
Thanks to the OP for inspiring 50 Greatest Canadian Rock Bands of All Time” such a great list, but also challenging ... Can anyone threaten The Guess Who? Is Chilliwack Top 20? Will Honeymoon Suite make the list? Loverboy outsold most Canadian bands, but do they out-rank Triumph? Does The Band count as Candian? Lee Aaron vs. Alanis Morrissette. These are the difficult questions Vistalite Black wrestles with.

I was listening to them a few weeks ago and realized how silly most of the lyrics were .
Funny , it had never occurred to me before.
