guess has to be mentioned - where the stick hits the rim- is one part of it.
The other half- is the other end- where your hand above the stick touches the drum head- how close how accurate
that's where (?) the sound (travel) resonates (thru the drum..

you - your hand- can be off the head just vibing above it- or firmly down in on it

Hello!

I’m looking for hoops/rims that will make my cross-sticks scream like a banshee. I have no idea what a banshee is or if I’m even spelling that correctly, but I heard that they can get pretty loud.

I have both 8 lug and 10 lug metal snares so am looking for both types.

I’m thinking diecast but am open to other suggestions. Not interested in technique tips or advice on sticks.

Any suggestions?

What genre are you playing Death Metal?

NOUN
  1. (in Irish legend) a female spirit whose wailing warns of an impending death:
"the little girl dropped her ice cream and began to howl like a banshee" ·

That’s exactly it!

Irish Ice Cream Banshee Metal (IICBM).
With a sprinkling of 19th century Polka mixed in.

I realize it’s a fad but it pays the bills.

I like my 2.3mm hoops on my Yamaha RC Brass snare. It's a sturdy hoop with a loud cross stick and the entire shell resonates. It was something I noticed about the drum right away.

Not to poo-poo on your suggestion (because I'm not), but that statement gave me a little chuckle, because I can remember when people would say the exact same thing about 2.3mm hoops. :-D

Elvis
Hi Elvis! You are absolutely correct about my statement being said from the move from 1.6mm to 2.3mm! And, I'm glad I gave you a little chuckle!!
