My big sister called last night. She had been scouring some auction site a province over & remembered that Ludwig meant something to me. She scooped this up for me for a measly 58 USD (299 is the lot #). Looks to me like nickel hardware. It also looks like it has been through a lot. I'm assuming it was used as a marching bass drum. Thoughts?

Yes, 22". Do you think it's a single tension set up? early 60?
Yep, definitely single tension. You can tell because the T rods don't thread into the lug (there's no lug insert), they pass through it and thread into the claw hooks on the opposite hoop. Bit of a PITA to tune.

That series was known as the Century Single-Tension series, and the last Ludwig catalog they appeared in was 1971-1 — they're absent from my 1973 and later Ludwig catalogs.

Thank you! That's what I thought. Thanks for the history. It'll be fun to play around with. Might be nice for our second line...It already says New Orleans Jazz. Last time we paraded I furnished a COW Slingerland & it almost killed our bass drummer.
PS: interesting that they made these as late as 1971.

Has the center mounted disappearing cymbal mount. They were usually to dead center. Sometimes had a badge on the same panel and the earlier ones had the badge one panel over. You will be shocked at how good this drum may sound. I've got two 22" Club Date bass drums. They can really talk. I even like the single tension models as well. Have one of those. Tune easily. Great find Sis!

My sister sent me some pics. On the calfskin heads there are 2 stamps. The cow is a Ludwig & Ludwig logo, i believe. & the second stamp is Geo. Newnham Drummers Paradise, Toronto Ontario. I googled it and found a pdf of a vintage Boosey & Hawkes percussion magazine with an article about the store & gentleman: http://www.ibew.org.uk/Percussion3-193510.pdf
(see page 14). They seem to have been an Ajax dealer, along with Ludwig. That leads me to another question....What in beejeepers is the thingmeebob doohicky that looks like it has 2 ice-cream scoopers on it (last 2 pics)?? I believe it is an Ajax part because of the diamond insignia.

Too cool. Nice score. I bet it will sound like $1,000,000.

And yeah, I took the chrome "wrap" off of a 24" Slingerland marching drum once. Crazy heavy.

I feel for your bass drum player.

Your bass drummer will also be shocked at how light-as-a-feathah this drum will be compared to a Slingy COW.
Plus, the larger issue: Can you HANDLE all the mojo comin' offa that thing?

Toilet roll or paper towel holder. Can't tell which without precise measurements of holes center to center.

Maybe the previous owner had spastic bowel syndrome.
