A rotary “removal tool” (snap on calls theirs the “crud thug”) was helpful for getting this nasty glue off of the 16” shell. Some sanding now to make it even enough to let the wrap lay flat, and some glue/clamping in the bearing edges where the plies have separated slightly, and she’s ready for wrap!
The box from jammin Sam came yesterday so I HAD to try the stuff on the one drum that doesn’t need any prep, the 24” bass drum.
Some people hate this tape method but it works !!

That looks great! I'm so used to humming and hawing about my own projects that I'm surprised to see someone working so fast!

Yeah well.. I still have plenty of other projects that were actually supposed to get done before this one, but these shells fell in my lap, and I’m playing in the tribute band, so I got inspired to actually do it. Having space on the credit card to order wrap doesn’t hurt, either

Jim Moritz suggests the tapered head Allen bolt to start the “crimp” and then a flat face bolt to finish it. I did basically the same thing with these two tools.. but it looks like I went a little too far and started to split the grommet.
Anyway, it looks like it’ll be pretty sweet!

I can’t say I’m super “pleased” with these results.. but it’s “ok”.

I saw some drums on Sam’s website that had the chrome wrap indented by the lugs and other hardware.. but forgot to ask him about such issues.

There’s an ever so slight wavy effect where the lugs are tightened down. I don’t know if pulling this off and gluing it would even help the situation

Very cool project in tribute to a very cool drummer! Great work. Just played 2 Cars tunes at last night’s gig.

I will channel your beautiful project next time I do these tunes.

That's cool that he replied! Even more motivation to get this done. Do you use any Simmons drums too?

I did the tape method on a few drums myself . I noticed a few spots where it wasn’t tight to the shell .
Don’t think I’d do it again …

I don’t have any Simmons.. I have a few Roland pads that I connect to a sample pad, as well as a snare drum trigger to get that fat 80s snare sample tied in with the live snare sound (think of the snare on “Drive”)
All of that stuff basically gets the job done for the sound effects needed!

Very cool. was just curious as I have a handful of that stuff. I bought a white set back in the 80's brand new and I still have them. I also have an SDS-8 brain and three black SDS-8 pads. It's fun to play around with.

How about some DFO feedback?
As much as I want to keep the kit looking as original as possible, I really dislike slingerland set o matic mounts, especially the regular non-super set-O-Matic version, like David used, which forces you to always set the two drums up at the same angle as each other.
Anyway, I have two 14” RIMS mounts from the 80s, and an abundance of pearl tom brackets and arms…
Do I dare install a pearl setup on these things? I could also go with some Gibraltar L rods, as I also have plenty of random double tom posts/stands…
If I hate it, I could always go back to installing set o matic mounts and find myself the proper stand.. but that stuff just seems so antiquated and not very heavy duty, regardless of the adjustment limitations

I'd avoid the Set-O-Matic stuff, due to the issues you noted. As authentic as you are already going, I don't think anyone should fault you for using better hardware 40 years after the band was using that old stuff. :)

Replying to your feedback question -

I would absolutely use what you have on hand. I don't like the Slingerland mounting hardware either - pearl stuff is common and nice to use, I would have no problem putting it on my kit if I had it on hand. I think the best tom mount hardware is L-arm stuff, but I have a bunch of pearl mounts/arms myself so that's what I use for my kits.

I yanked the wrap back off of the 24”, with plans to re-apply it with contact adhesive. I spent some time filling and sanding the shells, also.. to be sure I had the flattest surface possible.
I still didn’t get some spots “perfect” because pulling it off to reposition the wrap when it’s not parallel with the edges causes a bunch of “boogers” to form which then become high spots in the wrap and cause bumps.

Lesson learned… NEVER use this plastic chrome wrap on drums that aren’t perfectly flat, and be more careful to line it up exactly before joining the dried adhesive.

I think it’ll look good all in all ‍♂️

The 16x18 is still wrapped in red sparkle.. I need to strip that one down still
